John McEnroe's French Open commentary on Jannik Sinner and Rafael Jódar, among others, draws criticism from frustrated tennis fans.

Former world No. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam champion John McEnroe remains one of the leading voices in tennis broadcasting at the Grand Slams. However, the American’s commentary at the 2026 French Open has failed to impress the tennis community, particularly drawing criticism for his coverage of Jannik Sinner and Rafael Jódar’s matches.

Why John McEnroe Has Earned Backlash for His French Open Commentary

One of the sport’s most exciting rising stars, Rafael Jódar, made his French Open debut in emphatic fashion with a dominant 6-1, 6-0, 6-4 victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic. Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner cruised past Clément Tabur 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the second round. Amid the commanding wins, much of the online discussion centered around McEnroe’s commentary.

One fan called out the seven-time Grand Slam champion for mispronouncing Jódar’s name.

“John Mcenroe just called Rafael Jodar, “This guy Joe-Dar” when it’s pronounced “Hoe-Dar.” Mac hasn’t been doing his homework on one of the rising stars of tennis,” the fan posted.

Meanwhile, others took issue with McEnroe’s commentary during Sinner’s clash.

“Jannik doing his absolute best to spare us from as much McEnroe commentary as possible, thanks king,” one fan wrote.

“Of course john mcenroe is commentating the sinner match smh,” another fan chimed in.

In particular, the 67-year-old faced backlash for his constant chatter, with one fan claiming he “ruins” the matches.

“Why can’t McEnroe just keep quiet? He talks endlessly and is so boring. He ruins the tennis. Paul in Oxford,” one fan complained.

“John McEnroe’s commentating has gotten worse!” a fan commented.

“Can John McEnroe take a damn breath!!! dude hasn’t stopped talking,” said yet another.

John McEnroe Addresses Jannik Sinner’s Biggest Threats at the French Open

During his commentary on Sinner’s match for TNT Sports, McEnroe reflected on the factors that could prevent the Italian from winning the French Open title. With the temperatures soaring in Paris, the former world No. 1 suggested that the extreme heat may be the biggest threat to Sinner.

“If he played on a hot day, like we are going to have in this first week, that’s the person I would pick,” McEnroe said.

McEnroe also backed Novak Djokovic to challenge the four-time Grand Slam champion but acknowledged that the potential matchup would only take place in the final.

“I mean, Djokovic would be, to me, still a threat. Yeah. I still pick him. He beat him in the Australian. I’m sorry, he’s 39, I know. But he’s the guy that, you know, knows more than anyone. But that would have to be in the finals and that’s a long way away,” he added.

Jannik Sinner is set to face Juan Manuel Cerúndolo in the second round of Roland Garros, following the Argentine’s 6-2, 7-6(0), 7-6(7) win over Jacob Fearnley. The world No. 1 heads into the contest with a 1-0 lead in their head-to-head record, having claimed a 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 victory in their sole previous encounter at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.
