Zay Flowers Suffers Self-Inflicted Injury After Game-Changing Fumble

Zay Flowers put on a show in the AFC title game, but the Ravens rookie WR's most significant play was a mistake.

Although Baltimore Ravens rookie wideout Zay Flowers has put on a show in Sundays’ AFC Championship Game, his most memorable play might be a mistake. Flowers’ costly fumble at the 1-yard line will prove critical if Baltimore loses to the Kansas City Chiefs, and Flowers’ reaction to his error may also have lasting implications.

    Zay Flowers Injury Update

Down 17-7 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Ravens were close to getting back in today’s game against the Chiefs. Baltimore faced a 2nd-and-8 from Kansas City’s nine-yard line when Lamar Jackson hit Flowers, the Ravens’ first-round pick in last year’s draft, for a completion over the middle of the field.

Flowers nearly scored a touchdown that would have brought Baltimore to within three points. But Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed punched the ball out just before it crossed the goal line. Fellow CB Trent McDuffie recovered for a Chiefs touchback.

Flowers was so frustrated by his fumble that he slammed his hand on Baltimore’s bench and suffered a laceration. The injury didn’t seem overly serious, as Flowers returned to the field for the Ravens’ next offensive series.

Baltimore’s most productive receiver in 2023, Flowers continued his debut theatrics on Sunday, hauling in five catches for 115 yards and a touchdown on eight targets.

However, Flowers’ fumble wasn’t his only title tilt error. After dusting the Chiefs’ defense for a 54-yard catch near the end of the third quarter, he was penalized for taunting, moving the ball from Kansas City’s 10-yard line to its 25-yard line. Flowers’ fumble came four plays later.
