There’s rarely a dull moment in the NFL. Even after the games are over, fantasy football values are still shifting.
Seattle Seahawks RB Zach Charbonnet proved he could be a lead back last season but remains trapped behind Kenneth Walker III. Where does Charbonnet’s dynasty value stand heading into the offseason?
Zach Charbonnet’s Dynasty Outlook
I was pretty bullish on Charbonnet last season. He had the exact profile of the type of running back I like to target in the later rounds. Charbonnet possesses a three-down skill set, had injury contingency upside, and there was a chance he had standalone value. The first two proved to be true. The third did not.
Since Kenneth Walker III stayed largely healthy last season, Charbonnet was not a particularly useful fantasy asset. He gave fantasy managers just three games with double-digit fantasy points and just two games inside the top 24 weekly.
For redraft purposes, Charbonnet is just a handcuff. But in dynasty, we need to consider long-term value. There’s no guarantee of anything, especially not Walker remaining with the Seahawks.
With that said, Walker and Charbonnet are both 23 years old, separated by mere months in age. They were drafted one year apart, and both in the second round. It’s not as if Walker’s contract is set to expire multiple years before Charbonnet’s. It’s a one-year difference.
For Charbonnet to end up being fantasy-relevant in Seattle, he will need to either take Walker’s job (whether due to performance or injury) or work his way into a meaningful rule.
As a rookie, Charbonnet was unable to do the latter. He played 14 games with Walker. In those games, Charbonnet averaged 5.7 fantasy points per game. In two games without Walker, Charbonnet averaged 13.3 points per game.
Those aren’t elite numbers, but they are solid RB2 numbers. Fantasy managers certainly wouldn’t complain if Charbonnet gave them 13-14 points per game in a season.
The prevailing thought was Charbonnet would be the primary passing down back. And he was. But his target share was only 7.6%, identical to Walker’s. His 4.8 yards per touch was 24th in the league, and he averaged 3.78 yards created per touch, 14th in the league. Both of those stats point to a player with talent. The opportunity just needs to find him.

If we use historical precedent, Charbonnet is unlikely to ever overtake Walker without an injury. But historical precedent is with Pete Carroll as head coach. He is no longer in charge.
We really have no way of knowing how the Seahawks’ new head coach will handle this backfield. After all, he didn’t draft either Walker or Charbonnet.
Given their talent profiles and draft capital, it may very well end up being a pure meritocracy. The problem is I can’t say Charbonnet is definitively better than Walker. They have different skill sets and are both useful members of a backfield.

My best guess is this will remain a timeshare, with perhaps Charbonnet taking on a larger role as a sophomore than he did as a rookie. Even so, Charbonnet could remain trapped in an unenviable role for another 2-3 years. That’s a lot of his shelf life gone by the time he might be a weekly RB2.
Fantasy managers with Charbonnet should hang onto him. But if you don’t have him, I wouldn’t go out of my way to trade for him.
