The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a heartbreak against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59. Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy and Co.’s dream of a three-peat was shattered in a 40-22 loss at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
After the game, the Worthy addressed the media and hinted that some players might bid farewell to the gridiron or leave the franchise in the offseason.
Xavier Worthy Signals at Potential Departures From the Chiefs
A stinker of a performance from Mahomes and Kelce meant the Chiefs struggled throughout the game. Kelce finished with only four catches for 39 yards and the Eagles managed to hold him to zero catches in the first half.
Mahomes completed 21 of his 32 pass attempts for 257 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He turned the ball over too many times against a good Eagles team that capitalized on those mistakes to end the Chiefs’ bid at history.
Worthy talked about the possibility of some players retiring or leaving the Chiefs before the 2025 NFL season commences.
“I would just like to thank the guys in my room. This might be my last time playing with them. Some of them, [it] might be their last game. Trades happen. These guys really helped me out a lot, just on my development as a man and as a player in this league. This knowledge they gave me to learn and keep building my rookie year, I just really appreciate them for that… I have to give the credit to the guys in this room, even Trav and Pat,” he said.

There were rumors and speculation about Kelce’s retirement after the Chiefs won Super Bowl 58. However, he extended his stay with the franchise and became the league’s highest-paid tight end.
After an underwhelming performance in the regular season and the season finale, the spotlight again turned to Kelce’s future. Mahomes was asked about the tight end’s retirement plans following the Super Bowl heartbreak.
“I’ll let Travis make that decision on his own, man. He’s given so much to this team and to the NFL and been such a joy, not only for me to work with but for people to watch,” Mahomes said.

“He [Travis] knows he still has a lot of football left in him. You can see it. … He’s done enough to be a gold jacket guy and a first-ballot Hall of Famer… He’ll get to spend some time with his family and make that decision on his own,” he concluded.
When asked about his career plans during Super Bowl Week, Kelce was confident about suiting up for Kansas City for the coming seasons.
“I love doing this. I love coming into work every day, and I still feel like I have a lot of good football left in me. … For the most part, I plan on being a Kansas City Chief and playing football,” he said.
Wide receivers DeAndre Hopkins and Hollywood Brown are both free agents. This was Hopkins’ 12th year in the league. He will be 33 years old before training camp begins. It’s unlikely he will be back with the Chiefs.
For a declining player very close to the end of his career, Hopkins knows this was likely his best chance at winning a Super Bowl, and is understandably upset things did not go his team’s way.
Brown signed a one-year contract with the Chiefs last March, and it appeared he would play alongside Rashee Rice, potentially forming one of the top receiving duos in the league. Both missed time with injuries, however. Rice was shut down for the year, while Brown returned in time to enjoy the Chiefs’ playoff run. It remains to be seen if he will continue to don the Chiefs colors.
