Where Did Xavier Worthy Go to School? Exploring the Chiefs WR’s Football Journey

During the 2024 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Xavier Worthy with the No. 28 overall pick. Prior to Worthy’s NFL career, what college did he attend? Let’s revisit Worthy’s past and his football journey to this point.

Where Did Xavier Worthy’s Football Career Start?

Worthy began his football career at Central East High School in Fresno, Calif. As a senior, he recorded 992 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. As a result, Worthy was selected to play in the 2021 All-American Bowl, but he wasn’t able to play in the game due to the pandemic.

Worthy put together an impressive high school career, and he was a four-star recruit. Twenty-two colleges made an offer to Worthy. He initially committed to Michigan, but an administrative issue ultimately led him to attend Texas instead.

    Revisiting Worthy’s College Career

It didn’t take long for Worthy to make his presence felt with the Longhorns. As an 18-year-old true freshman, he caught 62 passes for 981 yards and 12 touchdowns across 12 games. Worthy broke Roy Williams’ school record for freshman receiving yards.

In Week 6 of the 2021 season, Worthy caught nine passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns against Oklahoma, breaking Texas’ single-game freshman receiving record.

As a sophomore, Worthy’s stats fell off a bit, but he was still productive. He caught 60 passes in 13 games, but his efficiency dipped, resulting in just 760 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.

Worthy’s third and final collegiate season was his best. As a junior, he reeled in 75 passes for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns.

Following three very strong years at Texas, Worthy declared for the 2024 NFL Draft.

    Worthy’s Highlights, Records, and More

After breaking Texas’ single-game freshman receiving yardage record, Worthy was firmly on the map. He was named a Freshman All-American in 2021, as well as Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year.

Worthy was named to the All-Big 12 Team in all three of his seasons at Texas. He was named to the first team as a freshman and junior and the second team as a sophomore.

The game-breaking WR also excels on special teams. He returned 22 punts while in college, totaling 564 return yards and one touchdown. His performance earned him the honor of being named CFN’s Punt Returner of the Year in 2021.

Worthy enters the NFL as one of the youngest receivers in the league. As a member of the Chiefs, it should be fun watching Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes find ways to involve a WR with that kind of game-changing speed.

Worthy is expected to play a significant role with Kansas City as a rookie, especially with fellow speedster Hollywood Brown sidelined early in the season after he dislocated the sternoclavicular joint in his shoulder in the preseason.
