The world has been buzzing about the Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena storyline. Famous personalities from across the globe have even shared their thoughts on Cena’s heel turn at Elimination Chamber and what it could mean for this feud.
Recently, a former WWE World Heavyweight Champion shared his reaction to the storyline, and his comments have sparked debate, as he claims that WWE isn’t happy with the direction Rhodes is headed.
Cody Rhodes Could Become Bigger Than the Business
Rhodes returned to WWE in 2022 and quickly became one of its biggest stars. His journey led to a historic WrestleMania moment last year when he defeated Roman Reigns in the main event on Night 2 to become champion.
And although Rhodes’ feud with Reigns ended, The Rock warned him that he would return for him. And being a man of his word, he did.
Cena turned heel after Rhodes refused to give The Rock what he wanted — his soul. Now, two of the biggest names in WWE — Cena and The Rock — are aligned against Rhodes. It’s only a matter of time, though, before we find out who will step up to support the American Nightmare.
Meanwhile, WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry believes Rhodes, like The Rock, is on the verge of becoming bigger than the business — and WWE doesn’t like it.
Mark Henry Says WWE Doesn’t Want To Build Super Champions
During the “Busted Open” podcast, Henry explained that WWE doesn’t like it when a superstar becomes bigger than the business because it makes negotiations more difficult.
Reflecting on the Rhodes vs. Cena situation, he said:
“The WWE does not want to build super champions anymore because they have to negotiate too much with them. They want people they can control. It’s not the case with Cody. Cody does what he has to do with this situation, he’s going to be bigger than wrestling, like The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin became bigger than wrestling.”
Henry also pointed out that this has happened before, naming The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Cena as examples of superstars who became larger-than-life figures outside of wrestling. And he believes Rhodes is on a similar path to greatness.
Given his meteoric rise in recent years, it’s possible that Rhodes could reach that level. However, his journey will largely depend on how his rivalry with Cena unfolds.
Will Rhodes prove himself once again on the grandest stage?
