Wrestling fans were evidently shocked at this past Saturday’s WWE Elimination Chamber by a surprising heel turn from John Cena, the industry’s biggest babyface who aligned himself with The Rock against Cody Rhodes.
The fan-favorite Rhodes was brutally assaulted in front of 40,000 fans and reportedly suffered serious injuries. While Cena and The Rock are two of the greatest wrestlers in the history of professional wrestling, it wasn’t actually them who injured the champ. It was Travis Scott, who accompanied The Final Boss to the ring.
Unexpected Heel Turn From John Cena
Cena, who has announced that 2025 will be his final year as a professional wrestler, has set his sights on capturing his 17th WWE championship after winning the Men’s Elimination Chamber match. As a result, Rhodes is now set to face the 16-time champion at WrestleMania 41.
Fans were eagerly cheering as two of the industry’s most popular good guys were sharing what seemed like a wholesome moment until The Final Boss entered the scene.
Accompanied by Scott, The Rock asked Rhodes about his decision to handle his soul. A week earlier, he had given the WWE Champion time until Elimination Chamber to make his decision. Rhodes replied that his soul belonged to the ring and to the fans. He rejected The Rock’s offer in an unflattering way.
Cena, who was present in the ring, appeared to appreciate Rhodes’ response and hugged him. But things quickly took a turn for the worse. The Final Boss, clearly not in the mood to accept “no” for an answer, gave the signal to Cena.
In that brief moment of suspense and confusion, fans saw Cena, who had spent most of his two-decade-long career playing the role of a good guy, transform into a heel and attack the champion.
This was undoubtedly one of the most surprising moments in wrestling history. And the shock continued when Scott, who had previously appeared in WWE as a celebrity guest multiple times, physically got involved in the attack against Rhodes.
Cody Rhodes Injury Update
Scott — with no wrestling experience — reportedly caused serious injury to Rhodes. Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio reported that Rhodes suffered a busted eardrum and a black eye during WWE’s latest premium live event.
“Cody got hurt. I’m pretty sure it was Travis Scott that did it. I’ve heard he had a busted eardrum and a black eye,” Meltzer said.

After The Rock and Cena attacked Rhodes, Scott also got physical, dodging punches one after another. His involvement in the attack has left fans wondering about his future in this storyline.
The Rock addressed Scott’s involvement during the post-Elimination Chamber press conference, calling it part of his strategic plan. He also hinted that we could soon see the rapper in an actual wrestling match.
Despite the serious injuries, Rhodes is expected to make an appearance on the upcoming episode of SmackDown on Friday, March 7, to address the shocking and brutal attack.
