Woody Johnson’s Net Worth: How the New York Jets Owner Made His Fortune

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is an heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune. What is his current net worth?

From acquiring four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers to shocking the NFL world by firing head coach Robert Saleh after the team’s 2-3 start, the New York Jets aren’t afraid to make aggressive moves in hopes of turning their franchise into a legitimate contender.

That all starts with the team’s owner, Woody Johnson. In addition to being aggressive, Johnson is also one of the richest NFL owners. Let’s break down Johnson’s net worth, how he made his money, when he purchased the Jets, and more.

What Is Woody Johnson’s Net Worth?

Johnson’s net worth is currently estimated at $3.4 billion.

Thanks to the success of Johnson & Johnson, Forbes estimates that the Johnson family is worth a whopping $16 billion.

Johnson & Johnson was founded in 1886 by Woody’s great-grandfather, Robert Wood Johnson I, as a small business that produced first aid kits and dental floss. It has since become one of the top medical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology companies in the world.

When Johnson purchased the Jets in 2000, he paid $635 million, which was the third-highest price ever paid for a professional sports franchise at the time. Now, the Jets are valued at approximately $6.8 billion.

The Johnson family currently ranks as the sixth-richest owners in the NFL.

    How Did Johnson Get Rich?

As previously mentioned, Johnson is an heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune and part of one of the richest families in the world.

The company was then handed over to his son, Robert Wood Johnson II, in 1932, when it started to become a global phenomenon. When Johnson II and his brother, Seward, passed away, their money went to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and their heirs. One of those heirs was current Woody, which is how he acquired the bulk of his wealth.

Despite being a Johnson & Johnson heir, it’s worth noting that Woody only worked for the company for one summer. Instead, Johnson was the chairman and chief executive of The Johnson Company, Inc., a private investment firm, prior to owning the Jets.

According to Forbes, “Woody’s ex-wife once told a family biographer that she never knew how much money her ex-husband had, meaning it’s possible the family’s net worth is even higher.”

In addition to being a successful businessman and NFL team owner, Johnson is also involved in politics. From Nov. 8, 2017, to Jan. 20, 2021, Johnson was the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom. In 2018, he relocated the United States Embassy in London.
