American boxer Gervonta Davis barely saved his undefeated record and WBA Lightweight Title on Saturday, March 1, as he registered his first boxing match draw against Lamont Roach Jr. While the fight’s result was highly controversial after Davis voluntarily took a knee near his corner, WNBA star Angel Reese noticed a weird detail in the American wrestler, which was also the main reason behind the controversy.

Davis voluntarily took a knee in the ninth round of the fight and leaned over the ropes, seemingly looking for assistance to clear an issue with his eye. Many thought it was a knockdown, but the American only received a stern warning from the referee and went on to draw the fight.
“It should have been a knockdown,” Roach said later. “If that was knockdown, I win the fight. He’s saying grease got in his eye, but if he takes a knee and the ref starts counting, it should be a knockdown. It is what it is. I’m not banking on that knockdown to win. I just thought I pulled it out.”
Davis claimed the grease impaired his vision, thereby voluntarily taking the knee made sense. However, Reese was not a fan of the hair product and urged the boxer never to use it again. She didn’t comment on the controversial decision, though.
“Whatever product they put in Gervonta braids, NEVER AGAIN! cause why it’s dripping down like that in his eyes,” Reese posted on X.

While Reese and Davis are not the closest of friends, they have often celebrated each other’s achievements. The boxer showed his admiration for Reese when she won Most Outstanding Player of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
Reese was picked No. 7 overall by the Chicago Sky in the 2024 WNBA Draft. She had an impressive rookie season and set the league single-season record in rebounds (446 rebounds in 34 games) and consecutive double-doubles (15). Her 172 offensive boards are also the most in a single season all time.
Reese averaged 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game before suffering a season-ending wrist injury in September. She is back to her best and is currently competing in Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 women’s professional basketball competition that allows WNBA players to compete during the offseason.
Reese is part of the Rose BC team along with Chelsea Gray and Lexie Hull. However, Rose’s recent five-game winning streak came to an end following a loss to one of the league’s founders, Breanna Stewart, and the Mist BC team — just a few hours before she commented on Davis’ controversial knee.
