Dallas Cowboys News: Will McClay To Remain With the Cowboys Next Season

    Published on

Why did Dallas Cowboys vice president of player personnel, Will McClay, says he won't be pursuing other job opportunities next season?

The Dallas Cowboys are in the clear as far as losing Will McClay this offseason.

McClay is the team’s vice president of player personnel, who has been an underrated but vital asset to the organization.

The Latest on Will McClay’s Decision

According to multiple reports, the Commanders and Panthers had requested permission to speak with McClay for their general manager or head of football operations vacancies.

However, McClay is staying in Dallas, and he said in an interview with the Cowboys that it was due to his commitment to the team and his family.

“I am committed to being here. The commitment I made to my son and the organization. I’m going to roll with it. I have another year left on my contract,” said McClay.

McClay’s son will also be a senior in high school next year, so committing to another season with the Cowboys makes the most sense.

Overall, McClay has been with the Cowboys for seasons in the scouting department but has been in his current position for seven years.

McClay has made it clear that he works well with those around him in the organization, adding, “I think it’s just a process. When you’re somewhere where you enjoy and respect and trust the work of other people around you, it’s really hard to beat.”

He works with Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, and Mike McCarthy to help build the team, especially with the draft and development process.

Stephen Jones spoke on 105.3 The Fan about McClay’s decision, saying this topic comes up yearly because of his work.

Jones credited McClay for working with the coaches to help put the team’s roster together with the draft process, free agency, and trades.

“Will’s always, I’m sure, going to be presented opportunities, and we just don’t ever take that for granted, but we also would love for Will to be here for as long as we can keep him here,” said Jones.

McCarthy also spoke about McClay’s decision to stay in Dallas, saying, “This is obviously great for the Dallas Cowboys. He’s very important to our operation, without a doubt. The most important you want in an organization is, when things are right, to build off consistency.”

Although McClay is locked down for another season, all eyes remain on the defensive coordinator, Dan Quinn, who is in conversations for head coaching opportunities.
