Why Is Russell Wilson Called Mr. Unlimited? A Look At Denver QB’s Infamous Nickname

    Published on

Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson is known for his memes as well as his play on the field. Where did his nickname, Mr. Unlimited, originate?

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has made a name for himself in the league as an elite quarterback after an exceptional tenure with the Seattle Seahawks. But aside from his play on the field, Wilson is known for many other things, such as his meme-able comments made off the field.

    Russell Wilson’s Self-Titled Nickname

Due to his corny quotes and his mannerisms, some have called Wilson “Robot Russell.” One of his most recent bits that had fans laughing was ending every press conference with “Broncos country, let’s ride.”

The quote has become a meme for the community as Wilson has been less than extraordinary for the team since his arrival.

The Broncos had a 5-12 record last season, including a 4-11 mark across Wilson’s 15 starts on the year. Wilson completed 292 of 483 passes at a career-low 60.5% completion rate for 3,524 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in one of the worst years of his career.

The struggles have persisted this season, as the Broncos currently sit at 4-5, although things have been starting to turn around as they ride a three-game win streak and Wilson shows glimpses of his old self.

Speaking of his old self, it was in 2018 when “Mr. Unlimited” was created. Back when he was still with Seattle, Wilson said in a video posted to social media that he was “typical, boring Russell, Robot Russell.”

“Everybody has to have an alter ego, right?” He said in the video. “And I’ve been thinking about what my alter ego would be, and I think I have an alter ego. His name is Mr. Unlimited.”

Drawing out the first “I” in “Unlimited,” the video was a hilariously awkward masterpiece.

“You got to be unlimited. You got to have a thought process of being unlimited. So when people ask you what you’re thinking about or what you want to do in life or where you want to go, you got to be unlimited. Tell them, ‘I’m unlimited.’ You know what I mean?” he continued in the video.

So the nickname was created by himself but continues to be a meme across the NFL, especially with Broncos fans. After a big win against the Buffalo Bills, a fan made a post on social media saying, “You just lost to Mr. Unlimited,” accompanied by the video.

As mentioned previously, Wilson has been warming up this season and just might begin living up to this nickname.

In the 24-22 win over the Bills, the quarterback completed 82.8% of his pass attempts for 193 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Mr. Unliiimited.

In the prior game, a surprising 24-9 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, Wilson completed 63.2% of his pass attempts for 114 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Unliiimited.

The Broncos face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football for the chance to increase their win streak to four. And who knows, maybe we’ll see glimpses of the old Mr. Unlimited in the matchup.
