In recent years, Amazon Prime Video became part of the NFL‘s TV deal, earning exclusive rights to stream Thursday Night Football games as well as an annual Black Friday game.
Let’s break down everything you need to know about the NFL on Amazon Prime Video, including how to watch, the broadcast crew, the complete schedule for the 2024 season, and more.
Why Is Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime Video?
Thursday Night Football has bounced around quite a bit over the last few years. From 2018 to 2021, FOX had the rights to televise the Thursday games. However, FOX decided to opt out of the final year of its contract to broadcast Thursday Night Football.
FOX’s CEO Lachlan Murdoch explained that the network felt opting out of the Thursday Night Football contract was simply the right strategic move.
This is when Amazon swooped in to become the new exclusive home of Thursday Night Football through 2033. While the exact amount they paid wasn’t made public, sources familiar with the matter revealed that Amazon is paying roughly $1 billion annually for the rights to Thursday Night Football.
Mike Hopkins, the Senior VP of Prime Video and Amazon Studios, explained the streamer’s decision to purchase the TNF rights shortly after the deal was announced.
“NFL games are the most watched live programming in the United States, and this unprecedented Thursday Night Football package gives tens of millions of new and existing Prime members exclusive access to must-watch live football on Prime Video,” Hopkins said in a statement.
Broadcast Crew for TNF on Amazon Prime Video
When it was announced that Amazon Prime Video was getting TNF, many fans wondered who would be part of their newly assembled broadcast crew. The streaming giant put together a star-studded cast.
The legendary Al Michaels handles play-by-play. Michaels is a legendary broadcaster who’s entering his 38th season as an NFL prime-time play-by-play voice. He’s joined by Kirk Herbstreit as a color commentator.
Herbstreit has been at ESPN since 1996 and is famous for his role on College GameDay. Kaylee Hartung, who’s had stints with ABC, CNN, and ESPN, serves as Amazon Prime Video’s sideline reporter.
The pregame and halftime shows feature host Charissa Thompson and former NFL players Richard Sherman, Tony Gonzalez, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Andrew Whitworth.
