Why Is Mason Crosby Kicking for Giants? 39-Year-Old Former Packer New Starter in New York

After struggling to find consistency at the kicker position, former Packer Mason Crosby will step in for the Giants on Christmas Day.

Former Packers kicker Mason Crosby will make his season debut for the New York Giants on Christmas Day.

Giants Sign Former Packers Kicker Mason Crosby

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported Friday that the New York Giants are signing Crosby to their practice squad.

Crosby signed with New York for its Christmas game against the Eagles after the Giants lost another kicker. Cade York headed to the practice squad with a leg injury after being named the replacement for Randy Bullock, who replaced Graham Gano.

Bullock was also placed on injury reserve this week with a hamstring injury, while Gano underwent season-ending knee surgery in November.

Crosby spent 16 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, won Super Bowl XLV with them as the starting kicker, and left the franchise after the 2022 season as their all-time leading scorer.

Crosby is 39 years old, and he was born on Sept. 3, 1984.

He grew up in Georgetown, Texas, and played football at Colorado from 2003-2006.

During his time at Colorado, he made a school-record 60-yard field goal against Iowa State in 2004. Crosby’s 58-yard field goal against Miami in 2005 was the longest ever kicked in NCAA Division I-A football at sea level without a tee. In all, Crosby holds 31 school records. Crosby connected on 66 of 88 field goals in total during his college career and 30 of 34 inside 40 yards.

He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Packers and earned the starting kicking role as a rookie.

In his first regular-season game, Crosby converted all three field goals he attempted, including a 53-yarder and a 42-yard kick with two seconds left on the clock to help the Packers defeat the visiting Philadelphia Eagles 16–13. The kick was the first game-winner by a rookie on opening weekend since 1979

The kicker played with Green Bay for 16 seasons. He left the Packers after the 2022 season, as the team drafted his replacement, Anders Carlson. Crosby signed to the Rams’ practice squad in December this season but was waived only six days later.

He now gets another shot to kick this season with the Giants, who have lost three kickers to injury.

Crosby has played in 225 games, helping him earn a spot in the Green Bay record book with 1,918 points, the team’s all-time points record.

He’s made 395 field goals and made 81.4% of attempts, which is 14th most in NFL history. Since 2015, when the NFL moved the extra point back to the 15-yard line, he’s made 95.4% of point-after attempts.

The Giants are taking on the 10-4 Eagles on Christmas Day. At 5-9, a loss will eliminate New York from the playoffs.
