    Published on

Why did the Tennessee Titans decide to bring back the Houston Oilers jersey and helmet combo? When did they change the look originally?

The Houston Oilers jersey is one of the most universally loved jerseys in all of sports. Its iconic look serves as a reminder of a different time in the world, where big bright colors were all the rave and visions of Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell running defenders overplay in our head.

While the Houston Oilers have not been a member of the NFL since 1996, the popular look is back once again on an NFL football field here in 2023. As an ode to the franchise’s rich history, the Tennessee Titans will be dawning the fan favorite today as they host the Atlanta Falcons.

Houston Oilers Jersey a Way To Honor History

The NFL finally loosened up their helmet rules, allowing teams across the league to use alternate helmets once again. By doing so, they unlocked the awesome throwback uniforms we have come to know and love. With the rule in mind, the Titans thought there was no time like the present to represent the rich history that brought them from Texas to Tennessee.

In 1997, the Oilers left the Lone Star State and became the first NFL team to call Tennessee home when the franchise relocated to the Volunteer State. Two years later in 1999, the franchise retired the nickname Oilers for good and became known as the Titans.

The team has changed its location, name, and jersey since that day. As the Titans get ready to take on the Falcons today, they are bringing back the uniforms that come with so much love and admiration, giving an ode to the past and their journey to this point.

Oilers Jersey Is an All-Time Great

Much like the Philadelphia Eagles and their Kelly Green uniforms, or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their creamsicle jerseys, the Oilers jersey is one of the special, widely revered, and enjoyed classic uniforms in the NFL’s history.

The uniqueness of the color scheme, and the historic players such as Warren Moon and Eddie George who dawned it during its time, all add to the mystique and love the jersey represents for the Titans franchise. While this is the first time in quite a while that the Titans will be dawning the classic look, the feeling and hope around the fans is that it is just the beginning of a regular thing for the team.
