On March 23, 2022, the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins agreed to a trade that shook up the NFL universe. The Chiefs dealt one of the best receivers in the league, Tyreek Hill, to the Dolphins for a package of draft picks. The Mahomes-to-Hill connection became the most electric combo in the league, so the move was shocking.
Miami wanted a top-flight receiver in the worst way, and the pairing of Hill and Jaylen Waddle immediately struck fear in the opposition. Tyreek Hill Trade Details
Let’s look at what the Chiefs received in the Hill trade and the players that came of those picks. Ultimately, they received 2022 first, second, and fourth-round picks, as well as a fourth and sixth-round pick in 2023. They would use those assets to move around a bit but have come away with some intriguing prospects.

- WR Skyy Moore
- CB Josh Williams
- CB Chamarri Conner
- DT Keondre Coburn
- 2024 fifth-round pick

(There is a caveat here as the Chiefs used additional draft capital to move around. The Chiefs also dealt a 2022 third-round pick, a 2022 seventh-round pick, a 2023 second-round pick, and a 2023 seventh-round pick.)

Why Did Kansas City Trade Tyreek Hill?
Hill wanted to be paid as a top pass catcher, and the Chiefs front office was leery of paying a player who had a checkered past off the field. Kansas City knew a massive contract extension with Mahomes required some savvy contract maneuvers to remain under the NFL’s salary cap.
The Chiefs did not select a single player with the picks from the Dolphins in the Tyreek Hill trade.

Hill also wanted to be the unquestioned top option in the passing game. Playing alongside tight end Travis Kelce, an All-Pro in his own right, Hill had to compete for targets from Mahomes.

If money were no object, the Chiefs and Hill would have likely figured it out, and the Cheetah would remain in Kansas City today.
Who Won the Tyreek Hill Trade?
Although surprising, the Hill trade seemed fair at the time of the deal, and a year and a half later, it still seems fair. The Chiefs received plenty of draft capital to address areas of weakness on both sides of the ball, making them a more balanced team. Plus, Kansas City used the salary cap to address other areas of need.

The Dolphins’ addition of Hill echoed in the league’s new version of “The Greatest Show on Turf,” with QB Tua Tagovailoa leading a track team to the end zone, giving headaches to defensive coordinators across the league.
