A new week in the NFL means a new look is upon us. This time around, it is the Detroit Lions who will square off against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football in a brand new, never-before-worn helmet. The Lions have a rich history, but for the first time in their existence, they will be breaking out a helmet that is blue and not silver.
While the helmet design has a new look and color, the logo on the helmet is a familiar one for the franchise. Let’s take a closer look at the Lions’ blue alternate helmet they will wear tonight and why they are wearing them.
Detroit Lions Debut Honolulu Blue Helmets for First Time
The Lions will be wearing their new Honolulu Blue helmet with their throwback logo as the decal for their Monday night showdown against the Raiders. It is the first time Detroit will wear the blue helmet after debuting the look to fans in the offseason.

In addition to the blue helmet, the Lions will wear their all-gray color rush uniforms that they debuted in 2017, as well — a clean, new, and modern look that will surely have the Lions faithful pumped up to see.

While the helmet is new, it is also used as a way to pay homage to the franchise’s history as well. The blue helmet will be the backdrop for the classic “Walking Lion” logo, which was the official team logo for the Lions from 1946 to 1969. The team is doing so to commemorate the franchise’s 90th anniversary this season.
This will be the first of two occasions where the team will dawn the look, with the second and final time of the season coming in the last week of the season against the Miami Dolphins.
A Change in NFL Uniform Policy
Currently, 20 NFL franchises have provided either an alternative helmet or a throwback helmet in the last two seasons. That is thanks to the NFL amending a policy last year to allow teams to wear one alternate helmet in addition to their regular one. Thirteen teams chose to do so last season when the new rule was implanted, with seven more teams choosing to do so this season.
It is a fun time in the NFL, with the hope being that all 32 teams in the league will, at some point soon, either provide a shoutout to the past or some type of innovative look. It is an easy way to sell memorabilia and boost jersey sales, but more than anything, it is just fun to see something new.
