Why Did Jalen Hurts Make the Pro Bowl? Revisiting the Eagles QB’s 2023 NFL Season

Despite fading at the end of the Eagles’ season, Jalen Hurts is taking part in the 2024 Pro Bowl as a replacement for a Super Bowl-bound QB.

Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts has made it to the 2024 NFL Pro Bowl and will compete against some of the best talent in the league at the all-star event.

After starting the season strong, it fizzled out for Hurts and the Eagles, but it still led to a call-up to the showcase game.

Why Is Jalen Hurts at the 2024 Pro Bowl?

The Pro Bowl has changed in recent seasons and is now much more of an entertainment television event. It sees the top players in the NFL complete a series of challenges and ends in a game of flag football.

Players are named to the Pro Bowl by being voted for by the public, with millions of votes cast in 2024. Hurts, however, wasn’t named among the first three quarterbacks to get to the 2024 Pro Bowl, and he has had to rely on other players being unavailable.

Hurts has made the Pro Bowl after being named as an alternative on the original roster. With the San Francisco 49ers making the Super Bowl, QB Brock Purdy is unable to attend the all-star game, and Hurts is his replacement.

Purdy was the top vote-getter with 451,864 votes, and Hurts replaced the Super Bowl-bound QB on the NFC roster.

Hurts isn’t the only QB on the NFC roster to have been promoted from an alternate, with Baker Mayfield replacing Dak Prescott and Geno Smith replacing Matthew Stafford.

The call-up means Hurts has made the Pro Bowl in each of the last two years and is the first Eagles QB to reach consecutive Pro Bowls since Donovan McNabb.

While he wasn’t originally named as a starter, Hurts led Philly to an 11-6 in the regular season record. He also passed for the most completions, yards, and touchdowns of his career. With 352 competitions, 3,858 air yards, and 23 touchdowns.

Hurts also joint-led all QBs with 15 rushing touchdowns alongside Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen.

The Eagles and Hurts started the season strong and looked strong contenders to make the Super Bowl again. Philly went 10-1 to start the season but lost 5 of their last six games to end the campaign.

However, they were unable to rekindle their form, and it wasn’t enough for the Eagles to overcome the rut they had found themselves in down the stretch of the season. Philly’s floundering season came to an end in Tampa Bay in the Wild Card Round.

Hurts is one of seven Eagles players at the 2024 Pro Bowl, with teammates Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, Landon Dickerson, D’Andre Swift, Darius Slay, and Haason Reddick also at the all-star event. A.J. Brown was also named to the Pro Bowl but will not be appearing.
