Why Did the Eagles Hire Kellen Moore? A Look at Philadelphia’s New Offensive Coordinator

    Published on

Former Cowboys and Chargers OC Kellen Moore returns to the NFC East to lead the Eagles' offense. Why did Philadelphia need a new offensive coordinator?

Entering December, it was unimaginable to think that the Philadelphia Eagles would have replaced their offensive and defensive coordinators before the NFC Championship Game kicked off. The Eagles finished November with a 10-1 record and were the top seed in the NFC, looking like a team ready to return to the Super Bowl.

Philadelphia dropped to the fifth seed after losing five of the final six games in the regular season. Following the Eagles’ loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round, head coach Nick Sirianni’s job security was in doubt. Sirianni remained as Eagles head coach, but defensive coordinator Sean Desai and offensive coordinator Brian Johnson were fired.

The Eagles hired former Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to replace Desai and are reportedly set to hire Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to replace Johnson.

Eagles’ Offense Stalled in Final Weeks

Philadelphia scored 25 points or more in eight of the first 11 games as they jumped out to a 10-1 record.

However, the Eagles scored 19 points or fewer four times in the final six games of the regular season. In the season-ending playoff loss, Tampa held Philadelphia to nine points.

Philadelphia was third in the league in scoring last season but dropped to seventh this season. The passing and rushing yards per game also dropped from last year’s performance.

Johnson was in his first season as offensive coordinator after replacing Shane Steichen, who left after last season to become head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Johnson joined the Eagles as quarterbacks coach in 2021 after 11 seasons as a college assistant.

What Kellen Moore Brings to Eagles

Moore just completed his first season with the Chargers after four seasons as the Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator. The Chargers offense ranked 21st in points scored and 18th in total yards this season under Moore.

Moore’s future with the Chargers was uncertain after the team hired Jim Harbaugh to be head coach. The team prevented Moore from interviewing with other teams for offensive coordinator jobs until they hired a head coach. He interviewed for the head coaching opening with the Chargers earlier this month.

Moore led the Cowboys’ offense from 2019 to 2022 when the team was second in the league in total offense and scoring. Dallas had the fourth-best passing offense and the seventh-best rushing offense in the four years with Moore as offensive coordinator.
