Why are the Texans’ Uniforms Different? A Look at the “Battle Red” Approach

The Houston Texans will aim for the sweep of the AFC South-leading Jacksonville Jaguars. What look will they have for this huge division showdown?

The Houston Texans went into “Battle Red” mode one week ago against the Arizona Cardinals. They went with a deep blue look but busted out their rare red helmet.

Houston improved to 6-4 overall with the rare attire. Will they be pivoting back to the all-red look on Sunday in a crucial AFC South battle?

What Texans Will Have on Against the Jaguars

The Texans teased their look by revealing they were “dripping candy paint,” which is a popular saying among Houston hip-hop artists such as UGK, Mike Jones, and even Beyonce.

Then, on Saturday morning, the Texans made it official ahead of their highly anticipated matchup with the Jaguars. They are aiming to have a red out.

This means the Texans will wear the red helmets for the second consecutive week. However, this time, C.J. Stroud, Tank Dell, Will Anderson Jr., and the Co. will be going with the red jerseys against the Jags.

When Did Houston Unveil ‘Battle Red?’ What Is Texans Record With Attire?

In the franchise’s 21-year history, they’ve never gone with the color rush look until 2017.

Houston has been immensely successful with the look. The Texans are 6-2 overall when they roll out the color-rush attire. They won their first game with the schemes in 2017 against the Cincinnati Bengals, which was a Thursday night contest.

But as far as wearing red as the gameday attire, the Texans first started wearing the alternate color in 2003. They went on to defeat the Carolina Panthers 14-10 with the red on.

They even won their first three games wearing red until taking a 2005 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, led by future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning.

What Happened in the Last Meeting With Jacksonville

To reiterate, the AFC South has its first marquee division showdown post-Thanksgiving.

Jacksonville brings a division-leading 7-3 mark in tow. Houston can snatch first place all to itself with a 7-4 record.

The Jags will enter NRG Stadium with retribution on their minds. The Texans represent one of their three losses. That game was also one of Jacksonville’s most lopsided defeats.

Down in Duval County, Stroud ended up outdueling Trevor Lawrence with 280 passing yards and two touchdowns in the 37-17 trouncing of the Jags. Fellow Texans rookie sensation Dell was another who went off on Jacksonville, snatching five passes for 145 yards and scoring once.

Houston even outperformed Jacksonville on third downs. The Texans converted on nine of their 15 attempts. The Jaguars were a dismal 5 of 13 facing the punting situation.

Now, the Texans will have their current three-game winning streak on the line as they channel their “Battle Red” mode on Sunday.
