Why Are the Jets Uniforms Different? Stealth Black Look Explained

The New York Jets will be decked out in their Stealth Black uniforms as they take on the Miami Dolphins on Black Friday.

Owner Woody Johnson announced in the summer of 2022 that the Jets would wear a Stealth Black alternate helmet during select games throughout the season, paired exclusively with the fan-favorite Stealth Black uniform. The tradition has been held for the 2023 season.

    Jets’ Stealth Black Uniforms

The Jets had a full uniform rebrand in 2019, and at that time, the league permitted only one helmet shell to be worn with any combination of uniforms. In 2021, the NFL updated its policy, and starting in the 2022 season, teams have had the option to wear a second helmet shell.

“When I put that all-black on plus the black helmet, I instantly feel like Spider-Man when he became Venom,” Linebacker Quincy Williams said.

The helmet shell is inspired by a Stealth Fighter Jet and features a matte black finish.

The Stealth Black helmet also includes a chrome green face mask, which is an extension of the team’s current green helmet shell. The helmet decal was updated with a white keyline, pulling together all three team colors on the helmet — green, white, and black.

“Our alternate helmets are the definition of swaggy,” former New York wide receiver Elijah Moore said. “Honored to rock out in those.”

The Jets first introduced black to their color pallet from 1990 to 1997 in the form of a black facemask and uniform striping, but it wasn’t until 2019 that the club wore a primarily black uniform on the field, which was then paired with a green helmet due to the NFL’s former one-helmet rule.

“Our new uniforms are built to perform on the world’s biggest stage and are inspired by the toughness, grit, and resilience of the New York City area,” Jets team president Neil Glat said at the unveiling of their then-new look four years ago. “They are designed to be both modern and innovative and representative of our aspirations both on and off the field.”

The Jets’ Stealth Black ensemble serves as the team’s alternate uniform.

This is the first year the NFL is having a Black Friday game, and it will be streamed exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The game will be streamed for free as part of a Black Friday “deal” presented by Amazon, so fans don’t have to subscribe to watch the contest between the Dolphins and Jets.

The last time the NFL played a game on a Friday that wasn’t in December was when the Los Angeles Rams played the St. Louis Cardinals to open the season on Sept. 18, 1970.

The Jets have a difficult task ahead of them as they take on the 7-3 Dolphins. New York’s offense has struggled greatly under Zach Wilson, who has been benched in favor of Tim Boyle. The former Packer will end up getting the start on Friday.

Boyle has not started an NFL game since 2021. He appeared in five games with the Detroit Lions that season, starting three of them, and went 0-3 during that time. Meanwhile, the Dolphins’ offense has thrived under Tua Tagovailoa.
