Why Are the Dallas Cowboys Wearing Blue Jerseys at Home?

    Published on

The Dallas Cowboys are a franchise with a lot of tradition. On Thanksgiving, they'll be wearing an iconic jersey that pays homage to that history.

Thanksgiving Day is a special day — a time to reflect, share a meal with family, and watch football. Over the years, football has become synonymous with the holiday, and we all, as fans, have become accustomed to seeing the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions on our television screen each year.

With the Cowboys playing on Thanksgiving since 1966, there is a lot of history there for America’s Team, and Thanksgiving is often used as a chance to take a look back at those days while having hopefulness for what has yet to come.

The Cowboys are a proud franchise with a rich history that they love to honor, and oftentimes, on Thanksgiving, they choose to do so by paying homage to yesteryears with their choice of uniform.

Why Are the Cowboys Wearing Blue Jerseys?

The Cowboys are known for being one of the very few teams in football to wear white uniforms at home as opposed to on the road. It is a decision that has been in place since the 1960s and is something they don’t often deviate from.

However, since the loosening of the helmet rules by the NFL ahead of last season, the Cowboys have chosen to bring back the classic Thanksgiving throwback uniforms they used to wear yearly.

Instead of their traditional home whites, they are wearing navy blue uniforms and white helmets as an ode to the past. It is a classic look that many around the fanbase are quite fond of, and it became a welcomed sight every year on the fourth Thursday of November before the league tightened restrictions on alternative helmets.

Dallas Cowboys Uniforms Over the Years

The uniform they will be dawning on Thanksgiving this year features double stars on the shoulders, white pants, and a white helmet with a solid navy star on the side.

It is a drastically different look than the Cowboys typically wear, but it pays homage to the teams from the early 1960s, where these were their primary look before switching over to a variation of what we see now beginning in 1964.

From 1960-1964, the Cowboys wore a white helmet and a navy star decal before they switched and began wearing the silver helmet and bordered star we now see today. They have always had a white uniform and a navy uniform in some capacity but have consistently used the navy uniforms far less than their traditional white ones.

The reason for the frequent use of the white jersey, especially at home, began because of former Cowboys owner Tex Schramm and his belief that the white jerseys popped more and looked better on television back in the day.

Even from the beginning, the Cowboys were always one step ahead when it came to marketing their brand.
