Top Players To Target With the No. 6 Pick in 2023 Fantasy Football Drafts

Some managers groan about having a pick towards the middle (generally picks 5-9). But this year, there are multiple players that managers can make an argument for taking first overall.

If one of those players falls to No. 6, followed by picking again earlier in Round 2 than the first five managers, that is a start many fantasy managers would be happy with.

Ultimately, you’ll need to think about your strategy and the unique conditions of your league to make the best choice for you. With most leagues drafting these next two weeks, here are players to consider when on the clock.

Austin Ekeler, RB, Los Angeles Chargers

Fantasy managers could do no wrong in selecting a do-it-all rushing and receiving stud who plays for a potent offense set to blast off even higher this season and is motivated to be a fantasy manager’s MVP.

Ekeler finished as the RB2 in 2021 and RB1 in 2022 while leading the NFL in touchdowns in both seasons. With this type of production floating around, using the sixth pick on him seems almost criminal.

However, some fantasy managers may shy away from Ekeler due to his age. Running backs who are 28, while very much young for the earth, are on the older side for the positions.

Also, new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s quick-scoring offense and rookie wideout Quentin Johnston may open up the passing game more for the wide receivers.

With that to consider, an improved and healthy WR group of Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Johnston could open up more quality rushing lanes for Ekeler.

Also, should the injury bug continue to hit Allen and Williams, QB Justin Herbert will have no problem peppering Ekeler with targets, as proven by Ekeler’s 127 targets for 107 receptions last season.

Cooper Kupp, WR, Los Angeles Rams

Kupp was well on his way to duplicating his overall WR1 numbers from 2021 — 145 receptions for over 1,900 yards and 16 TDs — but a Week 10 injury halted that dream and ended his season.

Before Kupp’s injury, he averaged over 20 points per game in full-PPR formats and was a target hog, earning around double-digit targets in five of his nine games with a season-high 19 targets in Week 4.

The question surrounding the 30-year-old WR is his injury history, as he suffered a hamstring injury during practice on Aug. 1. At this time, he is practicing again after missing several weeks and plans to play in Week 1.

Also, another key to Kupp having a great season is the return of QB Matthew Stafford, who is 35 and coming off an injury-filled season, missing a game due to a concussion and the final seven from a spinal cord injury.

At the time of writing, Stafford is fully healthy going into 2023 and set to start for the Rams when the season begins.

With that to consider, a healthy Stafford and Kupp are the Rams’ best chances for having a successful season, as Kupp is the best offensive weapon by far and an easy lock for double-digit targets every game he plays.

    Tyreek Hill, WR, Miami Dolphins

Hill left K.C. last season to take his talents down to South Beach and had one of his best seasons as a pro, setting career highs in targets (170), yards (1,710), and receptions (119).

Hill could easily be in the discussion to finish as the overall WR1, especially given his goal of hitting 2,000 receiving yards. With Hill’s game-breaking speed, he could!

However, fantasy managers have to take his QB into careful consideration. Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa suffered multiple concussions last season. Also, WR Jalen Waddle may command more targets should he take the next step. Both wide receivers had no issues coexisting with each other last season, though.

Furthermore, Miami’s offensive-minded coach, Mike McDaniel, plans to lean heavily on Hill again this season with few options in the passing attack after Hill and Waddle.

Travis Kelce, TE, Kansas City Chiefs

Kelce is an exceptional and highly sought-after first-round pick in fantasy football drafts. In fact, in specific fantasy formats, tight ends are given more points than other positions, making Kelce an even more valuable asset on your team.

One of the main reasons for Kelce’s consistent success is his strong connection and chemistry with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, which has resulted in a reliable stream of touchdowns and yards for Kelce throughout his career.

Additionally, his ability to consistently perform at a high level has earned him a reputation as one of the most dependable players in the league.

Looking at his career stats, Kelce has finished as the top tight end in six of the last seven years, the outlier season being a TE2 finish in 2021. Over that span, Kelce has produced over 1,000 receiving yards in each season, over 100 receptions in three of those seven years, and three campaigns with double-digit touchdowns.

When drafting Kelce, you get elite WR numbers at a position where production like this is almost nonexistent. Kelce gives fantasy managers massive position advantage at tight end, scoring 100 points more than T.J. Hockenson, the TE2, last season.

Should fantasy managers take Kelce with their sixth pick, you have to keep in mind this sets you behind in the running back or wide receiver positions that often require starting multiple starters.

Also, Kelce is in his 11th year in the league. At 33 years old, the cliff has to eventually come for him. However, he has shown zero signs of slowing down.

He is the clear No. 1 option for arguably the best quarterback in the league and a highly potent offense with no clear WR1 option to take targets away.

Overall, if you’re looking to secure a reliable and highly productive tight end for your fantasy football team, Kelce is an excellent choice in the first round of your draft. His talent, consistency, and reliable performance make him a valuable addition to any team looking to win their league.

    Bijan Robinson, RB, Atlanta Falcons

Selecting a rookie with the No. 6 overall pick could be a hazardous idea, but the payoff could be huge, as many consider Robinson to be the next big thing at RB.

Robinson landed in one of the best situations he could have from a fantasy football perspective. Atlanta selected him eighth overall in this year’s draft after having a stellar college career at Texas.

Last season, the Falcons were one of the most run-heavy teams in the NFL. Even in games where Atlanta was down, they continued establishing the running game, allowing rookie fifth-round pick Tyler Allgeier to rush for over 1,000 yards.

Robinson’s prowess as a running back is unmatched. His exceptional speed, impressive power, and agility make him stand out from his peers, making him a dominant force on the field.

He has the size to be a power back, speed to break long gains, and competent hands to be involved in the passing game, all of which add up to being a fantasy-friendly RB.
