Who Is Mike White? NFL Veteran Aims To Lock Down Miami’s QB2 Spot on Saturday

Who is Mike White? Let's take a look at the career of the Miami Dolphins backup quarterback.

There is no doubt about who the starting quarterback of the Miami Dolphins is. Tua Tagovailoa is in the Dolphins’ plans for now and the future, and while healthy, Tua and the Dolphins have been successful as of late.

While Tua and his seat are secure at the top of the depth chart, one question remains: Did the Dolphins do enough behind him? Miami currently has three quarterbacks on the roster and the preseason to sort it all out. Does quarterback Mike White instill any confidence if thrown into action?

Mike White Has Had Opportunities in the NFL

The Dallas Cowboys selected White in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, and since then, White has been on a total of three teams, including the New York Jets and the Dolphins. In his first three seasons in the NFL, White never saw action outside of preseason games.

The Cowboys waived White in 2019 after the team decided to carry just two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster and opted not to add him to the practice squad, making White have to look for his next opportunity somewhere else.

That opportunity came quickly as in the same offseason, White signed with the Jets on their practice squad and remained with the team through the 2022 season, playing in eight games and starting seven of them during that time.

In March of 2023, White took his talents to South Beach and signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins.

Is White Locked in as QB2?

While White has experience on his side and a two-year contract with Miami, nothing is for sure in the NFL, and certainly not at the quarterback position.

Skylar Thompson is the third quarterback behind White at the moment, and while he may not be as polished or seasoned as White is currently, Thompson has shown unique ability and has invaluable playing experience as he was thrust into a starting role during last year’s playoffs. Thompson went into Buffalo and gave the Bills all they could handle in their playoff matchup.

Do the Miami Dolphins Have Enough Behind Tua?

The Dolphins, much like many NFL teams, are surely unsettled about the prospects of losing their starting quarterback. Tua and his injury history add another interesting element to the dynamic, and for such an important position and a situation that can turn so quickly, one could wonder if the Dolphins could afford to do more there.
