Who Is Ian Book? Philadelphia Eagles QB Anticipated To Suit Up for Thursday

Who is Ian Book? Let's take a look at the quarterback ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles' second preseason game in 2023.

Fresh off an incredible season that saw the Philadelphia Eagles make it to the Super Bowl, there is no doubt about who is the quarterback for the Eagles going forward. Jalen Hurts got paid as such this offseason, and as a result, the quarterback position looks as set as it can be for a franchise with Hurts at the helm.

Behind Hurts is NFL veteran Marcus Mariota, a long-time starter and player looking for a fresh start in a new role. While Mariota feels secure as the Eagles’ QB2, former Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book is heading into his third season and looking to make an impression on this Philadelphia franchise to maybe win a job or stability within the league. Let’s take a closer look at Book ahead of preseason game No. 2.

Ian Book’s Path to the NFL

Book attended Notre Dame, where he would be named the starter of the Fighting Irish in 2018. He would go on to play in 47 games as a golden domer, starting 35.

Book accomplished much, with a legacy etched in stone. He eventually passed Tom Clements, Ron Powlus, and Brady Quinn for the most wins as Notre Dame’s quarterback with 30. He also finished second all-time in touchdown passes with 72 and led his team to a College Football Playoff appearance.

Book would go on the NFL ranks, where he was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round with the 133rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He made one start in his rookie season but eventually would be cut during training camp the following year.

Nevertheless, unemployment would be short-lived for Book, as he was claimed by the Eagles the very next day. He’s been with the team ever since.

Ian Book Looking To Stick Around

As we mentioned earlier, the Eagles look rock solid at their top two quarterback spots. Yet, with the NFL implementing the rule this season allowing for a third QB to dress on game day, Book finds himself in a position to possibly stick around and continue his career.

Philadelphia currently has four quarterbacks on the roster, with the fourth at the moment being rookie sixth-round pick Tanner McKee. The Eagles invested draft capital this offseason to take McKee and have some invested interest in his development. If Book is going to stick around in Philadelphia, he’s going to have to use this preseason as his reason why he should stay instead of the rookie.
