San Francisco 49ers starting QB Brock Purdy has risen as fast as any player in the NFL. From the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Mr. Irrelevant has quickly ascended to the starting QB of one of the best teams in the league. Purdy’s rise came out of nowhere, as many teams showed no interest in the Iowa State product.
Fast forward a couple of seasons, and NFL talent evaluators may receive a mulligan as Brock’s younger brother, Chubba Purdy, is a QB for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. How does Chubba stack up against his big brother, and how does the NFL view the younger Purdy?
Purdy Brothers Tale of the Tape
Brock Purdy stands a hair under 6’1″ and weighs 212 pounds. Chubba stands 6’2″ and weighs 210 pounds. As many would have imagined, their measurements are virtually identical, and the brothers have similar physical statures.
Chubba followed Brock in Queen Creek, Arizona. Brock kicked off the QB competition by leading their high school, Perry, to back-to-back 6A Division AIA State title games in 2016 and 2017. Unfortunately for the Purdy family, Perry lost both games to Chandler High School. Still, Brock made a name for himself, earning Gatorade’s Player of the Year award.

Coming out of high school, Brock was considered by recruiting outlets, namely 247Sports, as a three-star prospect and chose to play college football at Iowa State University.
Chubba sat for his first two seasons at Perry behind Brock but took over once his older brother went off to Iowa State. The Perry signal-caller found immediate success, combining for 4,500 total yards of offense and 59 touchdowns. Chubba led Perry back to the 6A title game, where they again lost to Chandler High School.

Brock’s younger brother had a similarly productive season his senior year, this time being honored as the Arizona Offensive Player of the Year. Chubba was considered a better player out of high school as a four-star recruit. After initially choosing to play college football at Louisville, Chubba flipped his commitment to Florida State.
Chubba Purdy’s College Career Goes Off-Course
Chubba Purdy became just the fifth true freshman QB to start for the Florida State Seminoles. He was buried on the Seminoles QB depth chart behind standout Jordan Travis and James Blackmon. Chubba spent two seasons at Florida State, but his collegiate career wasn’t panning out as he imagined, so he decided to transfer to Nebraska.
Chubba’s Cornhusker career has had an unceremonious start, with his first season ending with surgery to his injured collarbone. He hasn’t become a consistent starter at the collegiate level that many had hoped for following a prestigious high school career.
Chubba still has time to show his abilities to NFL scouts. The younger Purdy can change his mind with a strong performance during his final collegiate years. Even if the NFL doesn’t regard Chubba highly, that may not always be. Just ask Brock.
