Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has been coaching at the top level in the NFL for close to 25 years. His time with the Chiefs has brought the success of two Super Bowl rings. But other than Kansas City, who else has Reid coached during his time in the NFL? Let’s take a look back at Reid’s coaching career, whether as a head coach or a position coach.
How Many Teams Has Andy Reid Coached in His Career?
As a head coach, Reid has been in charge of just two teams, the Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. However, as a position coach in the NFL, he has been with a third team, the Green Bay Packers, who he spent seven years with prior to joining the Eagles in 1999.
Reid’s full coaching career dates back to 1982 and spans eight different teams. After graduating from BYU in 1981, he joined the coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the 1982 season, his first in a coaching role. During that time he worked with Mike Holmgren, who he would coach under with the Packers.
Reid’s college football coaching career took him from BYU to Missouri via San Francisco State, Northern Arizona, and UTEP. His career as a coach in college spanned 10 years before his move to the NFL, where he has been for the last 32 years. Here is Reid’s full coaching career:
- BYU (1982): Graduate Assistant
- San Francisco State (1983-5): Offensive line coach
- Northern Arizona (1986): Offensive line coach
- UTEP (1987-8): Offensive line coach
- Missouri (1989-91): Offensive line coach
- Green Bay Packers (1992-8):
- Assistant offensive line and tight ends coach (1992-6)
- Quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach (1997-8)
- Philadelphia Eagles (1999-2012): Head coach
- Kansas City Chiefs (2013-present): Head coach
What Is Reid’s Record as a Head Coach?
Reid has an impressive 253-140-1 record in regular-season games as a head coach across the Eagles and Chiefs (as of Week 8 in the 2023 NFL season). He has a .643 win percentage as a head coach in the regular season. When you include his 22-16 playoff record, his overall number climbs to 275-156-1, for an overall win percentage of 0.637. Reid is currently fourth all-time among NFL head coach wins leaders when combining regular season and postseason games.
Adding to Reid’s impressive head coach résumé are two Super Bowl victories and four Conference Championship wins. He has a 2-2 record in the Super Bowl, with QB Tom Brady having handed him both of those losses. Both Super Bowl victories have come while head coach of the Chiefs, with one loss apiece as head coach of the Chiefs and Eagles.

Reid’s record as the head coach of the Chiefs is extremely impressive. He has never had a losing season in 10 years with the team, and entering Week 9 of the 2023 NFL season has a .724 winning percentage with a 123-47 record. A 9-7 finish in 2014 is the only time that Reid has not won double-digit games as the Chiefs head coach.
In his career, Reid has only dipped below .500 on three occasions as a head coach. Those were his first and final seasons as Eagles head coach and in 2005 (the season after they lost the Super Bowl). With just two 8-8 seasons, Reid has had a winning record in 19 of his 24 seasons as a head coach to date. With the Chiefs entering Week 9 at 6-2, he appears on pace to have 20 winning seasons in 25 years.
