It’s official, the 2023 Super Bowl is here. The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will face off in Super Bowl 58. The matchup will be a rematch of 2019 when the Chiefs defeated the 49ers in Super Bowl 54. The jersey colors for each team have been released. What are they?
Which Colors Are the Super Bowl Teams Wearing?
The deciding factor between who chooses their jersey each year is the home team. The home team of the Super Bowl is decided in an alternating manner between the NFL’s two conferences. In Super Bowl 58, the AFC representative is the home team, meaning the Chiefs get to choose which color they want to wear.
The Chiefs announced on X (formerly known as Twitter) that they would be wearing their red jerseys this year. This means the 49ers will be wearing white. In 2019, the Chiefs also wore red against the 49ers.
Does the color of a team’s jersey impact their likelihood to win the game? Apparently, it might. Of the last 19 Super Bowl winners, 16 have worn white jerseys. However, the Chiefs were one of the three teams to beat those odds.
During the Patrick Mahomes era, the Chiefs have made the Super Bowl four times, including in four of the last five seasons. They’ve won two and lost one. Here’s a look at each of their Super Bowl appearances with Mahomes as the starting quarterback.
- Super Bowl 54: Chiefs 31 – 49ers 20 — Red jerseys
- Super Bowl 55: Buccaneers 31 – Chiefs 9 — White jerseys
- Super Bowl 57: Chiefs 38 – Eagles 35 — White jerseys
- Super Bowl 58 Chiefs ? – 49ers ? — Red jerseys
A fun fact about the Chiefs’ choice of wearing red regards Taylor Swift. Swift, who’s been in a relationship with star tight end Travis Kelce all season, released an album titled “Red” in 2012. Swift’s appearances at Chiefs games this season have garnered major attention for the NFL and the Chiefs as a franchise. She is likely to be at the Super Bowl as well.
