When Was the Last Time the Chiefs Played in the Super Bowl? Revisiting Kansas City’s Last Trip to the Big Game

The Kansas City Chiefs are chasing an unprecedented three-peat this season. Patrick Mahomes and Co. will take on the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26.

The Chiefs finished the regular season with a 15-2 record, securing the AFC West title and the No. 1 seed. They received a bye for the Wild Card Round. With an extra week of rest and practice, Kansas City defeated the Houston Texans to advance to the AFC Championship Game.

Andy Reid’s squad will compete in their seventh consecutive AFC Championship with another Super Bowl appearance on the line against the Bills. Let’s look at the Chiefs’ last trip to the Super Bowl.

When Was the Last Time the Kansas City Chiefs Played in the Super Bowl?

The Chiefs are on a golden run. Since 2019, they have made it to four Super Bowls, emerging as winners three times. Their last appearance in the big game was last year when they faced the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium.

After a quiet and scoreless first quarter, Brock Purdy’s side took a 10-3 lead before the end of the first half. The Chiefs turned it around in the third quarter and took a 13-10 lead before a touchdown pass from Purdy to Jauan Jennings handed the lead back to San Francisco.

The Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker tied the game with less than six minutes to spare. And with less than two minutes remaining, the 49ers added three more points to their tally courtesy of Jake Moody’s 53-yard attempt.

Butker snatched the victory out of the 49ers mouth with a 29-yard field goal to force overtime. And though San Francisco jumped out to a field-goal lead, Mecole Hardman scored a championship-winning touchdown in the game’s waning moments, securing the Chiefs second straight Super Bowl win.

    Chiefs’ NFL Playoff History

The Chiefs have won four Super Bowls in their franchise history. After winning their first in 1969, they had to wait 50 years to win another. But Mahomes made sure fans didn’t have to wait long for the third. Kansas City took home its third Lombardi Trophy just three years later and went on to win its fourth the following season.

The Chiefs have won four AFC Conference Championships and haven’t lost the AFC West title since 2016. Kansas City also made the playoffs for the tenth straight time this season. The Chiefs are 25-21 in their playoff history and have made it to the Super Bowl six times. They are 6-3 in the Conference championship matchups and want to make it 7-3 on Sunday.
