The deadline to apply the franchise tag to potential NFL free agents has now passed. However, there is now another deadline for both the players who received the franchise tag and the teams who gave it. That deadline is regarding the final opportunity teams will have to negotiate a long-term contract extension with these players who have received the franchise tag ahead of the 2022 NFL season.
Franchise tag extension deadline
The deadline for teams to negotiate and agree to an extension with the players they franchised tagged is set to be July 15, according to Spotrac. That would be the same date as it was in 2021, with the time for that deadline likely to be 4 PM ET.
If teams do not manage to negotiate an extension with the player, they will not have another opportunity to do so until the conclusion of the 2022 NFL season. Therefore, that player would be left playing in 2022 on the tag price for their respective position.
What happened in 2021?
Last season, 10 players were franchise tagged. Of those, four subsequently managed to agree to a long-term deal with their respective teams. However, the other six players all played on the franchise tag in 2022 and were either tagged again or look set to reach free agency this offseason.
According to Over the Cap, between 2011 and 2020, 99 players received the franchise tag. Of those, 58% signed an extension, 27% headed to free agency, and 7% received another franchise tag.
Those numbers varied slightly from the 2021 class. Dak Prescott, Leonard Williams, Justin Simmons, and Taylor Moton all signed new deals before the July 15 deadline. Meanwhile, five players who were tagged in 2021 look set to reach free agency in 2022. Chris Godwin was the only player to be tagged for a second consecutive time from the 2021 group.
