In a sport that often tells us that every inch counts, today feels very much like a day when every minute counts. The NFL trade deadline day is upon us, serving as one final chance for teams to add to their team via trade as they look to make a late-season push into the playoffs.
On the other side of things, teams that know this year is not their season can opt to unload contracts and collect picks to have an eye toward the future. Either way teams choose to handle the deadline, they better do it quickly — time is running out.
Here is everything NFL fans need to know about Tuesday’s trade deadline.
What Time Does The NFL Trade Deadline Close?
- Date: Tuesday, Oct. 31
- Time: 4 p.m. ET
While this is where the trades for the season come to an end, it doesn’t mean teams had to wait until now to make a move already. Teams have already begun adding pieces to their roster in hopes of taking them over the top.
Most notable was the Philadelphia Eagles acquiring safety Kevin Byard from the Tennessee Titans. Philadelphia brought in the safety for two 2024 draft picks and a safety swap with Terrell Edmunds.

We have also seen three wide receivers change teams this month. The Kansas City Chiefs brought back old friend Mecole Hardman via a trade with the New York Jets, and the Los Angeles Rams dealt Van Jefferson to the Atlanta Falcons. Even the high-flying Miami Dolphins were looking to add more WR threats when they traded for Chase Claypool from the Chicago Bears.
While NFL trades are not nearly as frequent as they may be in other professional sports, there is definitely some activity. Things can happen quickly, especially in the final hours before the deadline. Not every team is going to be able to make something happen, but the majority of teams can (and will) be working the phones today leading up to the final buzzer.
Are Deals Allowed To Be Made After the Deadline?
Once the deadline comes and goes today, there are no more trades allowed for the rest of the season. Deals may not get announced before the 4 p.m. ET deadline, but as long as the deal was agreed upon before that time, it will count and go through.
After today’s deadline, teams will no longer be able to strike a deal with each other until the beginning of the new league year at 4 p.m. ET on March 13, 2024.
