Prospects To Watch on Day 3

While the Tom Brady and Matt Hasselbacks of the world aren’t drafted every year, a few late-round QBs have found meaningful roles on NFL rosters. Just last year, rookie seventh-round QBs Brock Purdy and Skylar Thompson started multiple regular-season games and represented the 49ers and Dolphins in the postseason, respectively.

In 2019, Colts QB Gardner Minshew was drafted 178th overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’s started in 24 games since then and should be in line to start for Indianapolis in Week 1 of the 2023 season.

After Will Levis and Hendon Hooker are drafted, the drop-off in the 2023 class is substantial. There’s even a wide gap between Levis and Hooker, given the latter’s injury status, but both should hear their names called in either Round 2 or 3. Fresno State QB Jake Haener might sneak into the back of the third round with San Francisco having three of the final four picks, but his name should be called in Round 4 if not.

Don’t count out UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, either. With Carolina selecting Bryce Young first overall, Thompson-Robinson is easily worth a late-round investment despite his size concerns. Playing nearly five years as the starting QB, he threw for 10,945 yards, 88 touchdowns, and just 36 interceptions during his time with the Bruins. With the right coaching staff, DTR’s athleticism and ability to go off-script are enough to make him among the best value picks from the 2023 NFL Draft.
