What Is a Sports Equinox? History of NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB Games Being Played on the Same Day

The sports equinox is upon us, but what is it, how rare are they, and how do I enjoy it myself? Find out more today.

A sports equinox is like a solar eclipse for sports fans. It only happens so often, so we must stop and view its beauty in all its glory. Sure, sports equinox is fun to say and may grab attention at your next dinner party, but what exactly is it? And how often have sports fans had the opportunity to enjoy it in all its splendor?

What Exactly Is a Sports Equinox?

Many sports fans consider the month of October to be the greatest month of the calendar year. Sports fans are treated to MLB’s World Series, the middle of the NFL season, the tip-off of the NBA, and the return of the NHL season.

With all four major US sports in action during the same month, games from every sport have to have landed on the same day, right?

Precisely. That, my friend, is what we call a sports equinox.

Today, the Texas Rangers play the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 3 of the World Series. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Raiders face the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football. And the NBA and NHL slate is in full force.

How Rare Is a Sports Equinox?

Today is the 30th sports equinox. Enjoy the opportunity because there was a 16-year period from 1985-2001 where sports fans went without one.
