The Dallas Cowboys have been one of the best teams in the NFL in 2023 even though they’ve been playing without their star cornerback, Trevon Diggs.
Diggs suffered a serious injury in September that has seen him sidelined since September.
What Is Trevon Diggs’ Injury?
Prior to the Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals, the Cowboys’ corner suffered a devastating injury during a practice session. On Sept. 21, Diggs tore his ACL in a routine 1-on-1 non-contact practice drill.
Sources told PFN at the time that he managed to walk off the practice field of his own accord. However, it was later confirmed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that the injury was severe and that “Diggs suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during Thursday’s practice.” An MRI scan later in the day confirmed it.
On how the injury occurred, Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy stated, “When you see the video, it’s something that can happen anywhere. Two guys going for the football, and it looks like he came down and stepped on the foot of the wide receiver. This was not a drill issue at all.”
Continuing to speak to reporters once the news had broken, McCarthy said, “Obviously, you feel sick [for] him. It’s definitely a punch to the gut for our football team, but this is an opportunity for our defensive depth to stand up and continue to move forward.”
In Diggs’ absence, the Cowboys have been playing Jourdan Lewis and DaRon Bland, who has stepped up and surpassed all expectations for him in his second season with Dallas. Bland has broken the all-time NFL pick-six record and has locked down the other corner spot alongside Stephon Gilmore.
When Is Diggs Expected To Return?
The injury to Diggs is season-ending, and after undergoing surgery to repair his ACL, the corner isn’t expected back until the 2024 season.
Initially, Mike Garafolo from NFL Network reported that “A timetable for Diggs’ return to play has not been established, but he is currently projected to miss the remainder of the current seasons.”

Diggs successfully underwent surgery in late October. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Oct. 25 that “Cowboys’ CB Trevon Diggs underwent surgery on his torn ACL, per sources. Doctors discovered that all of Diggs’ other ligaments were intact, and he now is poised to return in 2024.”
Post-surgery, Diggs remained positive, telling the media, “There’s a reason it happened. So I can’t be mad at it. I just gotta roll with the punches and just get back.”
