The New York Giants chose to move on from Daniel Jones to Tommy DeVito. In Week 13, they may be forced to move on from DeVito to the next man up.
What happened to DeVito, and who starts for New York if he doesn’t play?
What Is Tommy DeVito’s Injury?
DeVito played in last week’s 30-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he wasn’t able to practice much this week in preparation for the Thanksgiving Day game against the Dallas Cowboys. He is listed on the injury report with a right forearm injury.
The Giants indicated on this week’s injury report that DeVito was limited on Tuesday and sat out on Wednesday. Additionally, DeVito did not fly with the team to Dallas on Wednesday and will instead undergo further evaluation and then rejoin the team in Dallas later on Wednesday evening.
None of the indications on DeVito’s status this week suggest he’ll be able to suit up against the Cowboys on Thanksgiving.
Who Will Start in Place of Tommy DeVito?
Update: Tommy DeVito is officially out, and Drew Lock will start in his place.

In the likely event DeVito misses Thursday’s game, it’ll be Drew Lock who starts in his place.
Lock signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Giants this past offseason. Thought to have been signed to be Daniel Jones’ backup, it was a moderate surprise when Lock was overlooked in favor of DeVito when the Giants benched Jones.
The Giants are Lock’s third team since he was selected with a second-round pick (No. 42 overall) in 2019 by the Denver Broncos. After being unable to convince the Broncos he was their future at the position, Lock was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 along with two first-round picks, two second-round picks, a fifth-round pick, defensive lineman Shelby Harris, and tight end Noah Fant in exchange for quarterback Russell Wilson.
Lock competed with Geno Smith for Seattle’s starting position heading into the 2022 season but lost out and was the team’s backup quarterback. He didn’t play in a regular-season game for the Seahawks that season but did appear in four games with two starts for Seattle in 2023.
Last week against Tampa Bay, Lock was 1/1 for three yards.
When Will Tommy DeVito Return From Injury?
No strong indication has been given by DeVito or Giants head coach Brian Daboll as to when the quarterback will be back on the field.
While DeVito’s progression from the time New York’s game against Tampa Bay ended last week through preparations for this week’s game suggested he would be unable to play against Dallas on Thanksgiving, there is no reason to think his absence will be extended due to the forearm injury.
Daboll will undoubtedly be asked about DeVito’s status following his team’s game against the Cowboys on Thursday afternoon. Assuming DeVito doesn’t play in Dallas, he will have had 13 full days of rest before the Giants play their Week 14 game at home against the New Orleans Saints.
