What Happened to DeAndre Hopkins’ Dad? How the Chiefs’ WR Is Honoring His Late Father in Super Bowl 59

DeAndre Hopkins plans to honor his late father during Super Bowl 59. Here is how the legendary wideout plans to send his message.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins has spent the past 12 seasons amassing a career worthy of Hall of Fame consideration. The star wideout is a three-time All-Pro selection and has been named to five Pro Bowl teams during stints with Houston, Arizona and Tennessee.

Despite the individual accolades, playoff success has eluded Hopkins – until now.

The Chiefs, winners of the past two Super Bowls, acquired Hopkins in October, 2024 in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. Hopkins bolstered their receiving room after early season injuries to Rashee Rice and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown.

Hopkins figures to be a key contributor in Kansas City’s quest for a three-peat in Super Bowl 59.

DeAndre Hopkins Reveals Special Meaning Behind His Super Bowl Outfit

Hopkins will arrive at Super 59 dressed in a mink coat, but this isn’t your normal display of lavish luxury. When Hopkins was just five months old, his father died in a tragic car accident. The loss of his father led to Hopkins and his three siblings being raised by his mother, and the wideout is eager to fulfill a goal once he arrives in New Orleans.

“My dad died in 1992, and he, uh, he left me a couple of things and one of the things that he left me was a mink jacket,” Hopkins said. “And so, I always said I would wear that mink jacket to my wedding and to the Super Bowl, whichever one happened first.

“Obviously, I’m not married so I’m gonna wear my daddy’s mink jacket, dawg.”

Speaking to reporters during the week, Hopkins’ reflections on his father’s death and the opportunity to be an inspiration to the next generation show the magnitude of this moment for him and his family.

“To all the kids out there living in small towns, in small houses, with single parents. To the kids who see violence, who see loss, who don’t get the resources they deserve, but who still have big dreams. Know that I was a kid in your exact shoes, and this week, I’m playing in the Super Bowl. Don’t give up, work hard, keep believing. Where you start doesn’t determine where you end up.”

Hopkins has notched seven 1,000-yard seasons since entering the league in 2013 and will enter the 2025 season just 16 receptions short of 1,000 for his career. In Kansas City, he has provided stability and a reliable option for quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, hauling in 41 catches for 437 yards during the regular season.

While Hopkins has only one reception during this year’s playoffs, the Chiefs hope his dad’s mink coat can help inspire an unforgettable performance versus the Philadelphia Eagles.
