What Happened to Daniel Jones? Giants QB Out With ACL Tear

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones is out for the season with an ACL tear. What's the timeline for his return and will it affect his status in 2024?

In Daniel Jones’ first game back from a neck injury back in Week 9, the quarterback went down with another ailment that will have him out for the remainder of the season. When will Jones return to the field?

    Daniel Jones Injury Update

Jones limped off the field and went straight to the blue injury tent on the sideline after suffering a non-contact injury during the second quarter of the New York Giants’ Week 9 blowout loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. He was later ruled out for the remainder of the game before an MRI that Monday revealed a torn ACL, which will sideline him for the remainder of the season.

“It’s devastating,” left tackle Andrew Thomas said, who returned to the field that week after missing seven games with a hamstring injury. “One of my teammates, one of my good friends, it sucks to hear news like that with injuries like that. Some stuff that you can’t control, so just do my best to try to uplift him during the situation, help him out, and wish him the best with the recovery.”

One year after leading the Giants to their first postseason berth in six years and earning a new contract, Jones threw just two touchdown passes this season — both at Arizona on Sept. 17 — and six interceptions. He injured his neck in Miami on Oct. 8 and missed the next three games.

He completed 67.5% of his passes for 909 yards before his season ended.

“It’s pretty disappointing,” wide receiver Darius Slayton said. “You don’t ever want to see any of your teammates go down, but for me personally, being here my whole career with DJ and kind of just the natural connection a receiver and quarterback have. Obviously, for me, I think it’s a bit personal.”

New York turned to backup Tyrod Taylor to start each of the three games Jones missed with the neck injury, but after he went out with a rib injury in the Giants’ Week 8 loss to the New York Jets, it’s been all Tommy DeVito.

At the time of Jones’ injury in Week 9, DeVito had gone 17 of 27 for 174 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in two appearances.

Since then, he has led the way for the Giants, who have since taken a loss to the Dallas Cowboys and had a pair of wins against the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots.

DeVito had an impressive showing in the 31-19 win over the Commanders as he completed 69.2% of his passes for 246 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. In total, DeVito has put up 697 yards for seven touchdowns and three interceptions in five games with three starts.

The Giants expect Jones to be their starting quarterback in 2024.

“He’s in there rehabbing right now. He’s going to attack it,” general manager Joe Schoen said. “You guys all know Daniel and his work ethic; probably a guy we’re going to have to pull back. But the expectation is, when Daniel’s healthy, that he will be our starting quarterback.”

Jones said his recovery should take “8-10 months.” Eight months would put him on the field for the start of training camp, while 10 would force him to miss part of the 2024 season.

“We don’t have a crystal ball in terms of how the rehab’s going to go,” Schoen said. “Different patients respond differently to these surgeries, and then whether there’s going to be swelling in the knee or any setbacks — nobody has a crystal ball on this, but that’s the expectation moving forward.”
