What Does the NFL Super Bowl MVP Winner Get?

What’s in store for the Super Bowl MVP award winner? A trophy, free cars, accolades, and a whole lot more come with the distinction.

The NFL’s Super Bowl MVP award is given to the most valuable player from the biggest game of the NFL season. Often, that falls on the shoulders of the quarterback, but there are some instances when that’s not the case.

Although most players care only about hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, the NFL Super Bowl MVP honor also comes with some special hardware. What does the Super Bowl MVP winner get if they are selected for the award?

What Does the NFL Super Bowl MVP Winner Get?

The Super Bowl MVP winner gets the Pete Rozelle Trophy. Now, that might not be as exciting as the Lombardi Trophy, but it’s still a huge honor for most NFL players. The list of Super Bowl MVPs includes some of the biggest names in the sport, so etching your name into that history book is impressive, to say the least.

Up until 2015, Super Bowl MVP winners were also given a free car. Tom Brady, after winning the award for his Super Bowl 49 performance, was the last Super Bowl MVP to be given a free vehicle.

He famously re-gifted that car to the real hero of that Super Bowl, Malcolm Butler. You might recall that game between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks when Butler intercepted Russell Wilson at the goal line to seal a Patriots victory.

“I would love to give him the truck,” Brady said. “I’m going to figure out how to make that work.”

A week later, Butler famously drove off in a brand-new red Chevy.

When Hyundai signed to be the NFL’s “official car” from 2016 to 2019, they stopped giving a free vehicle to the award winners. An odd decision considering how many people watch the biggest NFL game of the year.

Regardless, Ford once again took over in 2022 as the “official truck of Super Bowl 56.” However, that year’s Super Bowl MVP was not given a free truck.

It will be interesting to see if the free car returns this year, but as it currently stands, Super Bowl MVPs will need to be happy with the Pete Rozelle Trophy and the accolades that come with it.

The MVP award is chosen by a panel comprised of 16 media members – broadcast partner analysts, media from New Orleans, Kansas City, and Philadelphia, Pro Football Writers of America-appointed pool reporters that have attended team practice sessions during Super Bowl week, past Pro Football Writers of America presidents, at-large members of the national media – and fans interactively through the National Football League’s official website, NFL.com.

Who Won Super Bowl 59 MVP?

In some years, there is an obvious, clear-cut Super Bowl MVP. In other years, there are a number of players who have a strong argument for the award.

Super Bowl 59 falls into the latter category, as the Eagles dominated all facets of the game and had multiple worthy candidates.

For a bit, it looked like a defensive player might win the Super Bowl MVP award for the 10th time in NFL history.

Sweat filled the stat sheet, recording six tackles, 2.5 sacks, two tackles for a loss, and three QB hits. Sweat is an upcoming free agent, so he likely made himself some money with his monster performance in the Super Bowl. Sweat is currently the No. 3 ranked free agent on PFN’s Top 100 Free Agent Ranking.

Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean also shined. He picked the perfect time to deliver the first pick-six of his NFL career, jumping in front of Patrick Mahomes’ pass to intercept him and return it 38 yards for a touchdown.

However, it was Jalen Hurts who took home the Super Bowl MVP award, and deservedly so. He was responsible for three touchdowns (two passing and one rushing) and finished with 293 total yards (221 yards passing and 72 yards rushing).

Hurts’ 72 rush yards are a Super Bowl record for a QB, surpassing his own mark of 70 from two years ago. In fact, Hurts led both teams in rushing yards, joining Steve Young (Super Bowl XXIX vs. the San Diego Chargers) as the only quarterbacks to lead both teams in rushing yards in Super Bowl history.

He also became the fifth quarterback ever with multiple touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown in a Super Bowl, joining Ken Anderson (Super Bowl XVI), Pro Football Hall of Famers Brett Favre (Super Bowl XXXI) and Joe Montana (Super Bowl XIX) and Patrick Mahomes (Super Bowl LIV).

Hurts, who had 304 passing yards and 70 rushing yards in Super Bowl LVII, is the first quarterback ever with at least 200 passing yards and 50 rushing yards in multiple Super Bowls. He also became the third quarterback with a touchdown pass and a rushing touchdown in multiple Super Bowls, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers John Elway (Super Bowls XXI and XXXIII) and Joe Montana (Super Bowls XVI and XIX).

Hurts’ 83.7 QB+ was the second-best in a playoff game in his career, behind Super Bowl 57 two years ago vs. the Chiefs (84.3). Overall, it’s his fourth-best grade of the 2024 season.

Quarterbacks have now won the Super Bowl MVP award 34 times throughout NFL history, including in seven of the last nine Super Bowls.

Time and time again, Hurts made big plays with his arm and his legs.

Hurts got the Eagles on the scoreboard first, falling into the end zone and scoring using his infamous Tush Push.

He also threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown with 1:35 remaining in the second quarter.

Then, Hurts delivered the dagger, launching a 46-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith in the final minutes of the third quarter to give Philly a 34-0 lead.

Hurts has now been incredible in both of his Super Bowl performances. In Super Bowl 57, he totaled 374 yards (304 passing and 70 rushing) and four touchdowns (three rushing and one passing), but his Eagles came up just short against Mahomes, who took home Super Bowl MVP honors.

The Eagles received some criticism when they gave Hurts a five-year, $255 million contract in April 2023, making him the highest-paid quarterback in the league at the time. Well, that contract has aged well, as he’s now the ninth-highest-paid QB in the NFL and he’s worth every penny.

Who Won Last Year’s Super Bowl MVP Award?

Super Bowl 58 featured the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. In an overtime thriller, Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 25-22 victory. This gave Mahomes his third Super Bowl victory.

But that’s not all — Mahomes was named the game’s MVP, which was his second of his career.

Mahomes was 34-46, throwing for 333 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He also added 66 yards on 9 carries.

Head coach Andy Reid spoke about what makes Mahomes so special after he won another MVP award.

“He comes to work every day humble, wanting to be great, challenges the guys around him to be great every play,” Reid said. “He never flinches. ‘You dropped the ball? We’ll get the next one,’ or, ‘I need you in this spot, right here.’ It’s not like chewing them out or any of that. … That’s the way he operates.”
