Another week of NFL action means another week of injuries. Plenty of players got banged up in Week 6, while others suffered injuries that could knock them out for several weeks or more. Let’s round up the most notable injury updates from Sunday.
From the current NFL standings to team depth charts to coverage of every game in the 18-week NFL schedule, we have all the news from around the league to keep you up to speed!
Week 6 NFL Injuries Recap
Justin Fields, QB, Chicago Bears
Justin Fields had displayed marked improvement over his last two games, which makes his Week 6 injury all the more disappointing. The third-year QB has a dislocated thumb in his right hand and will undergo an MRI today.
Matt Eberflus said Fields is without a return timetable but is already considered doubtful for Chicago’s Week 7 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. If Fields can’t suit up, the Bears will roll with undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent, who starred in the preseason before completing 10 of 14 attempts for 83 yards and an interception in relief of Fields on Sunday.
Trevor Lawrence, QB, Jacksonville Jaguars
Although Trevor Lawrence didn’t return to the Jaguars’ Week 6 win over the Indianapolis Colts after getting his knee twisted, the Jags had that game firmly in hand when Lawrence went down.
While head coach Doug Pederson labeled Lawrence “day to day”, there is at least some doubt about whether Lawrence will be able to play on Thursday, per ESPN. He was listed as a non-participant on Jacksonville’s estimated Monday practice report.
If Lawrence can’t play, the Jaguars would deploy backup C.J. Beathard under center.
Ryan Tannehill, QB, Tennessee Titans
Ryan Tannehill left Sunday’s game during the third quarter and departed London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on crutches after suffering an ankle injury. The veteran quarterback has a high ankle sprain, injuring the same ankle that cost him several games in 2022.

Malik Willis completed four of five passes for 75 yards after replacing Tannehill, but 48 came on a catch-and-run by RB Tyjae Spears. The former third-round pick mostly looked overwhelmed, consistently succumbing to pressure en route to four sacks.
Could the Titans give rookie Will Levis a chance?
Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Las Vegas Raiders
While Jimmy Garoppolo had to be transported to the hospital after suffering a back injury on Sunday, tests on the veteran QB were considered precautionary. But even though Garoppolo’s injury isn’t as severe as the Raiders may have feared, he could end up missing time, per NFL Network.
On Monday, head coach Josh McDaniels said Garoppolo’s “prognosis is a lot better” and indicated the club and QB “dodged a big bullet. Still, he refrained from making a declaration about Jimmy G’s status for next week.
Brian Hoyer filled in for Garoppolo in Week 6, but Las Vegas could turn back to rookie Aidan O’Connell, who started against the Los Angeles Chargers when Garoppolo couldn’t suit up in Week 4.
Baker Mayfield, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Baker Mayfield couldn’t keep the good vibes going in Week 6, as the Buccaneers QB managed just 5.6 yards per attempt in a 20-6 loss to the Detroit Lions. To add insult to (literal) injury, Mayfield also suffered a contusion on his left hand, per head coach Todd Bowles.
X-rays on Mayfield’s hand were negative. If he were to sit out next week, Kyle Trask would start under center for Tampa Bay.
Christian McCaffrey, RB, San Francisco 49ers
Christian McCaffrey has been utterly dominant since joining the 49ers at last year’s trade deadline, but the electric RB went down with an oblique/rib injury on Sunday. CMC was trying to get loose on the sideline and eventually returned for one play. However, he came out of the game after that snap and did not return.

Kyle Shanahan didn’t offer any concrete updates on McCaffrey after San Francisco’s Week 6 loss, so we’re still waiting for an update on his condition. Jordan Mason and Elijah Mitchell will likely form a running back committee if CMC misses time.
David Montgomery, RB, Detroit Lions
David Montgomery handled 51 carries in Weeks 4 and 5, but the Lions will likely be without their workhorse for at least a little while. Montgomery went down after hauling in a screen pass on Sunday, left the game with a rib cartilage injury, and did not return.
Montgomery is expected to miss time, as the Detroit Free Press reported on Monday, although it remains unclear how long he’ll be sidelined. First-round RB Jahmyr Gibbs has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury. If he can return in Week 7, Gibbs should form a tag team with Craig Reynolds in Detroit’s backfield.
Kyren Williams, RB, Los Angeles Rams
Kyren Williams appeared to get banged up on Sunday, but he ultimately finished the game and put up 158 yards and a touchdown in the Rams’ defeat of the Arizona Cardinals.
However, Williams suffered an ankle sprain that will likely sideline him for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, per ESPN. But Williams’ injury is not believed to be long-term in nature.
Ronnie Rivers, Los Angeles’ RB2, wasn’t as lucky. Rivers has a Grade 3 PCL sprain and will likely miss four to five weeks, as NFL Network reported.
Zach Evans is the last man standing on the Rams’ running back depth chart, while Royce Freman is available on the team’s practice squad.
Damien Harris, RB, Buffalo Bills
Sunday night featured a scary scene in Buffalo when Bills running back Damien Harris had to be taken off the field in an ambulance. Fortunately, Harris gave a thumbs-up as he left the field. Head coach Sean McDermott said Harris has full movement and is trending in a “good direction.”
On Monday, ESPN reported that Harris has neck pain “but otherwise is going to be fine.” He was able to return home today, per McDermott, who added Harris has a sprained neck and is in the NFL’s concussion protocol.
Deebo Samuel, WR, San Francisco 49ers
McCaffrey wasn’t San Francisco’s only critical offensive weapon to go down in Week 7. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel left Sunday’s loss in the first half after going down with a shoulder injury.
Samuel’s X-rays came back negative — while he will undergo an MRI on Monday, the 49ers don’t believe he suffered a serious injury. Shanahan labeled Samuel day to day.
Lane Johnson, OT, Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles have the NFL’s best offensive line, but they could be without one of their key contributors for several weeks.
Right tackle Lane Johnson left Sunday’s game in the first quarter after suffering an injury and is believed to have a lateral ankle sprain, per NFL Network. While Johnson could miss this week’s game against the Miami Dolphins, he’s not expected to be sidelined for long.
Replacement Jack Driscoll struggled to protect Jalen Hurts after Johnson went down.
Trent Williams, OT, San Francisco 49ers
The Eagles and 49ers lost their first game of the season on Sunday, and both clubs also saw offensive linemen go down. Left tackle Trent Williams returned in Week 6 after injuring his ankle, but he was in a walking boot after the game. Shanahan said Monday that Williams is day-to-day.
Williams suggested he only came back in because he didn’t want San Francisco’s OL to face Myles Garrett without him. If Williams misses time, Jaylon Moore is the next man up on Brock Purdy’s blindside.
James Hurst, OL, New Orleans Saints
The Saints planned to reshuffle their offensive line in Week 6, benching left tackle Trevor Penning while shifting James Hurst from LG to LT. But Hurst injured his ankle during the first half of New Orleans’ loss to the Houston Texans and did not return.
Hurst didn’t break any bones in his ankle, per Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, but he will undergo an MRI to assess any other potential damage.
On Monday, Saints head coach Dennis Allen said Hurst is dealing with the same ankle injury he had two weeks ago in practice. Hurst was able to play through the ailment at that time. He did not participate in New Orleans’ estimated Monday practice ahead of the club’s TNF matchup.
Tyson Campbell, CB, Jacksonville Jaguars
Tyson Campbell may not be a household name, but he’s developed into a CB1 and become a crucial component of the Jaguars’ defense. He went down with a hamstring injury against the Colts on Sunday and never returned.
Pederson said Campbell will likely miss Week 7. Montaric Brown, a 2022 seventh-round pick, replaced Campbell in Week 6 and played 54 defensive naps.
