Odds from DraftKings sportsbook
Both Washington and Denver are coming off Week 7 losses, but the Broncos get the early favorite odds at -3. Denver returns home after its Thursday night loss to Cleveland, while Washington gets its second straight road game after playing in Green Bay this past Sunday. While playing at home should favor the Broncos, they’ve lost five of their last six games in Denver straight up.
Overall, the Broncos have a 1-2 home record in 2021, while Washington has the same mark on the road. Denver started the season strong with three consecutive victories but has since lost four straight as injuries have hampered both sides of the ball. Two of their biggest losses have come at linebacker, where Josey Jewell and Alexander Johnson are out for the season. This week, Denver added reinforcements by acquiring LB Kenny Young from the Los Angeles Rams.
Can the Broncos get back in the win column?
Injuries aren’t excuses in the NFL. The next-man-up mentality is necessary to put together a solid performance for an entire season, and Vic Fangio hasn’t gotten that out of his team. It’s clear Fangio is on the hot seat along with the rest of his coaching staff as Denver’s offense has managed to score more than 20 points just once over its losing streak.
It’s the same question for Washington. As they enter Week 8 with a 2-5 record, it’s unlikely you’ll see many predictions with Washington in the win column. This season, their two victories came by a total of 5 points against teams with a combined record of 5-8. Meanwhile, four of out WFT’s five losses have been by two or more possessions — Washington was outscored by 69 points in those contests.
Washington vs. Broncos prediction
Denver’s defense was supposed to help the Broncos win games this season, but they’ve looked bad over the last month. The same goes for Washington, which has one of the NFL’s best defensive fronts — on paper. The difference on Sunday will be WFT quarterback Taylor Heinicke’s ability to move the ball down the field, something he’s proven he can do at times throughout the season.
If Heinicke can find success, Teddy Bridgewater and Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will be forced to keep up. As the over/under suggests, this could be a low-scoring affair if Denver’s defense shows up.
Prediction: Washington 21, Broncos 20
