The Washington Commanders may have something to say about all these 2022 NFL mock drafts when all is said and done. After all, they acquired Carson Wentz and could completely ignore the quarterback position with the 2022 NFL Draft’s pick No. 11. Or, they could shock everyone and grab their signal-caller of the future. How does our final Commanders Mock Draft shake out?
Washington Commanders 2022 7-Round Mock Draft
Here are projections of every pick the Washington Commanders could make within a 7-Round 2022 NFL Mock Draft with the Pro Football Network staff as the general manager. This is what we would do with the picks after the board shook out while doing a full 7-round, 32-team mock draft.
Round 1, Pick 11: Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina
The new face of the franchise in the nation’s capital is none other than Sam Howell. He joins the Washington Commanders to compete with Carson Wentz right away, as Howell gives Washington a higher ceiling than Wentz. Howell makes every throw and has an underrated athleticism that will allow him to buy time in the pocket and maintain his vision downfield. His arm strength and off-platform ability will pay dividends in Year 1 as he adjusts to the NFL speed.
Other players in consideration: Kaiir Elam, CB, Florida; Jameson Williams, WR, Alabama
Round 2, Pick 47 (from IND): Isaiah Likely, TE, Coastal Carolina
After grabbing their quarterback of the future in Round 1, the Commanders grab Howell, a future TE1 who has the receiving skills of a true WR1. Isaiah Likely doesn’t add much in the run-blocking game, but his ability receiving is more than enough to make him TE1 in this class.
Other players in consideration: Trey McBride, TE, Colorado State; Erik Ezukanma, WR, Texas Tech
Round 4, Pick 113: Bo Melton, WR, Rutgers
Howell has a new weapon in Washington as Bo Melton makes the trek a bit south from Rutgers. Melton can win all over the field but has a documented success rate outside with his ability to get off defenders at the line of scrimmage. He can line up everywhere for the Commanders and is also a threat for special-teams play early in his career.
Other players in consideration: Tyquan Thornton, WR, Baylor; Jerreth Sterns, WR, Western Kentucky
Round 6, Pick 189: Josh Johnson, WR, Tulsa
After being decimated by injuries over the past few seasons, the Commanders need more than just a few bodies on offense. Josh Johnson is quick and among the highest-rated players left on the board. He can win nearly everywhere on offense and has some top-level after-the-catch abilities.
Other players in consideration: Reggie Roberson Jr., WR, SMU; Jaivon Heiligh, WR, Coastal Carolina
Round 7, Pick 230: Juanyeh Thomas, S, Georgia Tech
The Commanders defense’ is ready to win today. Juanyeh Thomas is a big piece of this puzzle that doesn’t need much to be complete. Thomas plays big and excels in coverage. He’s a ball hawk on the back end and could be counted on to play vital snaps in a rotation before eventually cracking the starting lineup.
Other players in consideration: Josh Thompson, CB, Texas; Chase Lucas, CB, Arizona State; Jaylen Watson, CB, Washington State
Round 7, Pick 240 (from PHI via IND): Nate Landman, LB, Colorado
Playing sideline to sideline for the Buffaloes, Nate Landman is a terrific three-down linebacker. He’s a tackling machine in the mold of former Cal LB Evan Weaver, except Landman made a bigger impact with his pass-rushing ability at Colorado.
Other players in consideration: Kyron Johnson, EDGE, Kansas; Chris Allen, EDGE, Alabama; Carson Wells, LB, Colorado
