Travis Hunter is back into the NFL Draft picture as a potential No. 1 overall pick, with the New England Patriots currently holding the top spot with one week to go. Jerod Mayo’s team climbed the spots following the loss to the Los Angeles Chargers this past Saturday, along with other factors taking place over the weekend.
Two months ago, the Colorado Buffaloes star contemplated the possibility of wearing Tom Brady’s jersey number at New England, which has now resurfaced online.
When Travis Hunter Got Real About Tom Brady’s No. 12
Nearly two months ago, Hunter speculated about the possibility of getting picked by New England in the 2025 NFL Draft. He wears No. 12 at Colorado, and players often carry their jersey numbers when turning pro. But in Hunter’s case, it’s a matter of prestige.
Speaking on his own podcast, Hunter resonated similar thoughts and said that he would not want to wear No. 12 at New England. That’s because it comes with responsibility, and at this point, he doesn’t see himself anywhere near Brady’s legacy.
“What if I go to the Patriots? Bro, I’m not gonna wear Tom Brady’s number,” Hunter said. “That’s too much legacy in that jersey. I respect Tom Brady too much,” he added.
Nevertheless, the seven-time Super Bowl champ’s jersey was retired earlier this year. So, as said in the video clip, Hunter would likely go for No. 40 if New England were to draft him.
As a wideout, the 22-year-old standout will have access to all numbers from zero to 49 and 80 through 89 in the NFL. Now it’s only up to him which one he wants to go with.
The Week 17 games triggered dramatic changes to the NFL Draft order. Looking at the current lineup, the Patriots will get to pick No. 1 overall after a 40-7 blowout loss to the Chargers.
Meanwhile, the New York Giants have fallen to No. 4 following a 45-33 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Both the Patriots and Giants now have a 3-13 record. Joining with them are the Tennessee Titans and the Cleveland Browns after their losses to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins, respectively, in Week 17.
