Tyron Smith Free Agency Predictions: Landing Spots Include Panthers, Commanders, and Ravens

Tyron Smith has been a stalwart at the left tackle position since being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys with the ninth pick of the 2011 NFL Draft out of USC.

    Smith was a first-team All-Pro selection in 2014 and 2016, a three-time second-team All-Pro (2013, 2015, 2023), and an eight-time Pro Bowl selection. He’s started all 161 games that he’s played and played in 13 of 17 games in 2023.

While he most likely won’t be with Dallas anymore, Smith could prove to be a valuable addition to a new team. Let’s take a look at his possible free agency landing spots.

Will Someone Save Bryce Young? Break Glass for Tyron Smith

The Carolina Panthers need everything. Their offensive line probably needs the most help, with 65 sacks allowed in 2023, tied with the Washington Commanders for second-most in the NFL. From the sacks, the Panthers led the NFL in yards lost with 504.

Bookends Ikem Ekwonu and Taylor Moton struggled at times but held their own on other occasions. Ekwonu allowed 11 sacks, which was the third-most in the NFL in 1,148 snaps. He also was called for 12 penalties (tied for third). Moton was more than sufficient, allowing just one sack and being penalized four times in 1,148 snaps.

The Panthers don’t have unlimited money with $19,102,214 in cap space, per Over the Cap. But they make up for it in their ability to give almost anyone a chance because they cannot afford to go 2-15 again. Maybe Ekwonu could slide to left guard for the time being.

Washington Commanders Build Offensive Line With Smith

About the aforementioned Commanders, they could really use an upgrade at left tackle. With Dan Quinn coming from the Cowboys as the defensive coordinator, he had a close eye on Smith on a day-to-day basis.

A point of emphasis for Washington has been to build the offensive line. The team signed both left guard Nick Allegretti and center Tyler Biadasz. Projected left tackle Braeden Daniels missed the entire season with a torn rotator cuff.

It simply makes sense for the Commanders to beef up their offensive line following last year’s 4-13 record. They have more than $71 million in cap space, per Over the Cap, and have retooled their team with 10 signings. This is going to be a totally different team with a totally different feel. It’s time for Washington to think big and be gaudy.

Even With Injuries, Smith Makes Sense for Baltimore

The Baltimore Ravens were hobbled with a multitude of injuries along the offensive line in 2023. Rookie guard Andrew Vorhees never played, due to a torn ACL suffered at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. Left tackle Ronnie Stanley, center Tyler Linderbaum, departed right guard Kevin Zeitler, and right tackle Morgan Moses all missed time due to injury.

While Smith has been banged up throughout his career and hasn’t played in 16 games since 2015, his consistency at 13 games in five of the last eight seasons is encouraging.

With a number of moves to be made, including potentially restructuring Stanley and Moses’ deals or a potential cut, it could be a pipe dream. Baltimore may opt for a youth movement across its offensive line with Linderbaum leading the way.
