Van Dyke was listed as a “game-time decision” by the Hurricanes heading into their Week 8 game against the Tigers. According to AP writer Tim Reynolds, Van Dyke attempted to go through warmups, and shortly after, the decision was made to hold him out of the game.

Earlier in the week, head coach Mario Cristobal had said that Van Dyke was “good to go” after dealing with an apparent leg injury. But his status changed as the game neared, and now, he’ll sit out while freshman Emory Williams gets the start in his place.

Van Dyke missed last year’s Clemson game with a shoulder injury, and now he’ll miss this year’s battle as well. This season, in particular, a game against Clemson would’ve been a big stock-up opportunity for Van Dyke, who was playing well heading into the game.

In six games played this season, Van Dyke has displayed major improvement from his play in 2022 and has revitalized his 2024 NFL Draft stock in the process. Heading into this week, Van Dyke had completed 129 of 183 passes (70.5%) for 1,721 yards, 16 touchdowns, and just six interceptions.

Seeing that Van Dyke was a game-time decision this week, there should be optimism regarding his status early for the team’s Week 9 contest against the Virginia Cavaliers on Oct. 28.

The Hurricanes are still seeking their first win in the ACC this year, and if they can’t get it against Clemson, the game against Virginia will be a good opportunity to right the ship.
