Minnesota’s Tyler Nubin is one of the top safety prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft. Here is everything to know about his career leading up to the draft.
Where Did Tyler Nubin’s Football Career Start?
Nubin grew up in St. Charles, Ill., and attended St. Charles North High School.
As a senior in high school, Nubin had 51 tackles, five tackles for loss, and six pass breakups on defense while also catching 42 passes for 549 yards and nine touchdowns as a wide receiver.
Additionally, Nubin rushed for 600 yards and 12 touchdowns on 109 carries from the quarterback position in the Wildcat formation.
Nubin was a four-star recruit and committed to play college football at Minnesota over offers from Michigan, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
Revisiting Nubin’s College Career
Nubin played in 12 games and had six tackles during his freshman season at Minnesota. He finished his sophomore season with 41 tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble. Nubin made 52 tackles with one sack and led the team with three interceptions as a junior.
Nubin suffered an injury that caused him to miss the final two games of his 2022 season, but returned to play in the Pinstripe Bowl. Nubin finished the year with 55 tackles, two tackles for loss, a team-high four interceptions, and one forced fumble, and was named Second-Team All-Big Ten.

After considering entering the 2023 NFL Draft, Nubin decided to utilize the extra year of eligibility granted to college athletes who played in the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and return to Minnesota for a fifth season.
In his final season, Nubin had five interceptions as he started 12 games with 53 tackles, one sack, four PBUs, and one forced fumble.
In his career, Nubin played in 55 games, had 13 interceptions, made 207 tackles (143 solo), and had 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. He broke up 24 passes (ranks tied for eighth in school history) and was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Nubin’s Potential in the NFL
Pro Football Network Draft Analyst Ian Cummings said Nubin is a potential top-32 prospect and is in the mix to be the top safety prospect in this class.
“In coverage, Nubin is fluid, physical, adaptable, efficient, variable with his technique, a quick processor, and a ravenous turnover generator,” Cummings wrote. “In run support, Nubin is a tenacious downhill attacker with instant angle recognition skills, play strength, and tackling ability. Nubin’s explosiveness and ball skills, in particular, are traits that naturally contribute to his playmaking ability.”

In regards to strengths, Cummings said Nubin is an elite processor and active communicator with two-high and single-high capabilities, excellent instincts, and a feel for positioning and hip leverage when playing in space.
For weaknesses, Nubin does not quite have elite sinking capacity when following sharp in-breaking routes and occasionally resorts to grabbing and tugging at WRs to keep leverage in man coverage.

In his final season, Nubin was named Second-Team Associated Press All-American and First-Team All-Big Ten Conference.
Nubin tied for sixth in the FBS with five interceptions, and he also set a school record with 13 career interceptions.
