Trey Lance spoke for the first time since being traded to the Dallas Cowboys from the San Francisco 49ers. He discussed his mindset as he learns a new offense, working with Dak Prescott, and his plan to contribute to the team.
How Does Trey Lance Feel About Being in Dallas?
Lance spoke about his excitement about being in Dallas.
“Obviously, you know, for me, it’s just learning, taking it one day at a time, not really trying to look too far forward or anything like that. But really, right now, just kind of be a sponge and learn and enjoy every day,” said Lance.

The quarterback said he tried not to expect anything when things were still unclear about where he would be going but said, “I can say that when I heard Cowboys, I had a big smile on my face. I was very excited to be here.”
Lance said it’s been a whirlwind since landing in Dallas, but he was excited to see the guys in the building.
“I know it’s been, you know, a tough couple of days these last two days with everything that goes on, you know, in this league. But yeah, just for me, it’s been trying to learn as much as I possibly can, trying to spend as much time with our coaching staff as I possibly can, and obviously learning from Dak [Prescott] and [Cooper Rush] as much as I can,” said Lance.
Dak Prescott Welcomed Lance With Open Arms
Even before seeing Dak Prescott interact with people in the building, Lance praised him for being who he is and how he treats people. Lance mentioned texting Prescott when he injured his ankle in Week 2 last season, taking him out for the remainder of the year.
The young QB discussed Prescott embracing him as the newest addition to the team, saying the Cowboys’ starter welcomed him with open arms.

“That meant a lot to me. I know it’s, it’s this business is, is crazy. But for me, like I said, I’m not looking forward at all, just really trying to take it one day at a time, and these guys obviously played at a very high level for a very long time. So nothing but, you know, obviously just tons and tons of respect for him as I think he deserves and gets from across the league. So, for me, just trying to learn everything I possibly can from him,” said Lance.
New Offense in Familiar Territory for Lance
Lance said he has a “one day at a time” mindset right now, but he described learning a new offense as fun and a “breath of fresh air.”
His focus is to learn enough to be able to contribute. As for his health, Lance says he feels 100% coming off of the broken ankle.
Lance is no stranger to the Frisco area. While playing for North Dakota State, he led the team to a victory in the 2020 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game and was named the MVP.
He also discussed working in Fort Worth during the offseason because of his ties with his former quarterback coach, Jeff Christensen, who has also trained in the area.
