The Florida State Seminoles have put some quality backs into the NFL in recent years with Dalvin Cook, James Cook, and Cam Akers. In a draft where there isn’t a consensus top running back prospect, Trey Benson has a chance to become the next impact RB to come out of FSU.
Here is everything you need to know about Benson heading into the 2024 NFL Draft.
How Tall Is Trey Benson?
Benson is an explosive 6’0” running back prospect which puts him into the 76th percentile at his height at the position among his contemporaries. His arm length (31 1/2”) and hand size (9 1/4”) hovers right around average for his position.
How Much Does Benson Weigh?
Benson’s compact build tips the scales at 216 pounds which falls in the 58th percentile among running backs. Benson’s excellent contact balance and broken-tackles-forced rate suggest his musclebound frame aids in his ability to dismiss would-be tacklers at the point of attack and regularly helps him churn out extra yardage after first contact.
How Old is Benson?
Benson is currently 21 years old but will turn 22 later this summer. His college career spanned over four years, which puts him closer to the middle of the pack entering the 2024 NFL Draft in direct comparison to his peers at the position.
What School Did Benson Go To?
Benson spent the first two seasons of his college career with the Oregon Ducks. He suffered a torn ACL, torn MCL, and tears in both his lateral and medial meniscus during his true freshman year in 2020.
He transferred to Florida State ahead of the 2022 college football season, where he spent his final two collegiate seasons as a member of the Seminoles.
Revisiting Benson’s College Career
Benson’s collegiate career got off to a slow start, suffering a major knee injury during his first year at Oregon in 2020.
In 2021, he managed to get back on the football field but had a limited role during his redshirt freshman campaign, finishing with just six carries for 22 yards and a score.
After transferring to Florida State ahead of the 2022 season, Benson exploded onto the scene with 1,134 total yards and nine scores in his breakout season as a sophomore.
He mostly mirrored that production in 2023 with 1,133 total yards and 15 TDs, helping lead the Seminoles to an undefeated regular season.
Benson’s Potential in the NFL
The top overall running back in the 2024 NFL Draft has been a heated and interesting debate throughout the draft community.
Benson certainly has a strong case to be the first running back drafted later this month with an ideal combination of size, speed, and pass-catching production entering the league.
The fact he tore up his knee early in his college career but still was one of the most explosive runners of the 2023 college football season is a testimony to his exceptional work ethic and commitment to the rehabilitation process.

He is arguably the best home-run hitter in the class, which was evident by his 85-yard touchdown run against Virginia Tech last year where he clocked in at 22 MPH. According to on-field GPS metrics, Benson topped 21 MPH as a ball carrier on five occasions last year. He has a compact build and strong frame, which allows him ample contact balance to work through traffic inside.
Benson’s ability to contribute in the passing game also gives him three-down potential for an NFL backfield, which gives him one of the highest potential ceilings at the RB position in this class.
