The Kansas City Chiefs added some much-needed help to their receiving corps last week when they signed veteran Marquise “Hollywood” Brown to a one-year contract. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce certainly seems pleased with the move after giving his resounding approval of the addition on Wednesday’s episode of New Heights.
Travis Kelce Is ‘F—— Pumped’ for Hollywood Brown Signing
Travis and his brother Jason Kelce discussed Brown’s signing among a plethora of other topics on Wednesday’s weekly edition of the brothers’ New Heights podcast, and Travis expressed his resounding support of Kansas City bringing in Brown.
“I’m f—— pumped, man,” Travis said. “A guy who can absolutely fly. Talked to my Oklahoma Sooners on what type of guy he is, and everybody just raves about the person he is in the building.”
The pair also got into a comedic discussion of Brown’s contract, which was widely reported as a one-year deal worth up to $11 million.
Jason expressed his annoyance at contract figures being inflated by agents and teams alike to make deals seem larger than they are. In this case, Brown is slated to earn $3.5 million in base salary and another $3 million in signing bonuses with various contract incentives based on playing time, touchdowns, and receiving yards giving him chances to hit the $11 million mark.
Travis, however, expressed his confidence in Brown hitting all of the incentives.
“Hollywood is going to get $11 million because he’s worth every penny, and he’s about to go crazy this year,” Travis said. “Put a stamp on it.”
Ultimately, Brown is a relatively low-cost addition with upside which could prove pivotal in the Chiefs’ pursuit of the NFL‘s first three-peat this season. Kansas City had a decidedly thin wide receiver corps this past season with rookie Rashee Rice leading the way behind Kelce’s production at tight end.
Brown has seen his ups and downs in the NFL, with injuries playing a part, but also turned in some productive seasons with 1,008 receiving yards in 2021 and 700+ yards in 2020 and 2022. He tallied 51 catches for 574 yards and four scores across 14 starts last season amid a turbulent quarterback situation with the Arizona Cardinals.
He will look to remain healthy this season in Kansas City and anchor a receiving corps that lacked consistent contributions outside of Rice and Kelce in 2023.
Patrick Mahomes has shown an ability to elevate playmakers during his time as the Chiefs’ quarterback and could do the same with Brown if the pair can develop some chemistry. All in all, it seems to be a sensible move for the franchise, and one that Kelce is on board with, at the very least.
