Tony Kornheiser: Jerry Jones Ready To Boost Cowboys’ Brand With Deion Sanders

Tony Kornheiser’s take on Jones possibly eyeing Sanders is a wild ride. At first, Kornheiser laughed it off: “My first impression was that this was a pipedream, that it won’t happen, that it can’t happen because Jerry Jones is not going to hire anybody more famous than he is.”

Fair point, Jones’ ego is basically its own universe. But Kornheiser didn’t stop there. “But then I began to think, well, you know what? Why not?”

And just like that, the light bulb went off. Jones is 82, chasing one more shot at glory with the Cowboys, and he knows he’s got to make stuff up. The recent hires have lacked that spark – something Sanders has got in spades. Kornheiser’s got a point. Jones and Sanders go way back; Sanders helped deliver a Super Bowl to the Cowboys.

The ESPN host asserted, “Jerry’s 82 years old. He wants to win one more time with the Cowboys. He knows that the people he’s hired recently don’t have the spark that Deion has. He was there with Deion. Deion played on that team. Deion won a Super Bowl with that team.”

The big kicker: Kornheiser thinks Jones might actually be down to share the spotlight. “’I can share the spotlight with Deion,’” he said, recognizing that this could elevate the Cowboys’ brand to new heights. And the Cowboys’ brand might just become “bigger than it’s ever been” if Sanders joins the crew.

So, what’s the play here? Jones might just be ready to swallow his pride (just a little) for the chance to boost his legacy. Sanders’ star power could be the final ingredient in making the Cowboys a true, all-time powerhouse.

Michael Irvin Champions Sanders for Cowboys HC

Cowboys legend Michael Irvin is pushing hard for Sanders to take over as head coach of the Cowboys in 2024. After a disappointing 7-10 season, the team fired Mike McCarthy, sparking rumors that Sanders could be next in line.

On “Speak,” Irvin revealed that Jones and Sanders had productive discussions shortly after McCarthy’s exit. Irvin shared a conversation he had with Sanders, who confirmed that, while the talks were positive, things weren’t moving fast just yet. Irvin shared,

“When I talked to Deion this morning, he said to me, ‘No, it’s not — I can tell you we did talk about these things, but Michael, that’s it. We can’t go any further with that,'” Irvin said of his conversation with Sanders.

“I was like, ‘No, no, no, I got a big mouth, I won’t go too far with it, but I appreciate you telling me that.’ Because that means good conversations are being held. Not just a conversation — good conversations are being held. And I want to shade you up and mix those conversations, keep them going, if you know what I mean.’”

Irvin emphasized why Sanders is a must-consider for the Cowboys. With his success turning around the Colorado Buffaloes’ program and his previous work at the HBCU level, Irvin believes Jones would be doing a disservice to the team if he didn’t at least consider the impact Sanders could bring.

“You have to consider this. If you’re not considering him, you’re not doing your job completely. And Jerry, when you think about what Deion did at the HBCU level, what Deion did at Colorado — think about what they were before he got there and what they are now. Who wouldn’t want that in their organization?” Irvin concluded.

While there’s a real chance Deion Sanders could bring that magic to the Cowboys, it’s clear that unless Shedeur Sanders makes his way to Big D as well, this dream scenario may remain just that — a dream.
