Here’s everything you need to know for this contest.
Tennessee Titans vs. New York Jets prediction and odds | Week 4
Odds provided by DraftKings sportsbook.
- Spread: Titans -7.5
- Moneyline: Titans -350, Jets +270
- Over/Under: 47 (Over -110, Under -110)
The Jets are 0-3 against the spread thus far in 2021. Week 1 was a close 19-14 loss against the now 3-0 Carolina Panthers, but through Weeks 2 and 3, New York lost by a combined 45 points. On one hand, things should begin to level out for the Jets, who are a professional football team by all legal and cosmetic standards. On the other hand, though, the defense is malleable, and not much is going right for rookie QB Zach Wilson early.
The Titans, meanwhile, are 2-1 against the spread, and 2-0 since their 38-13 Week 1 dismantling against the Arizona Cardinals. Week 1 caused some worry regarding the Titans, but those worries were squashed in Week 2 when Derrick Henry steamrolled the Seahawks. Then, in Week 3, Tennessee took care of business against division rival Indianapolis. It’s still not perfect, but it appears as though the Titans are finding their form.
Titans vs. Jets prediction
Anyone saying Wilson is a bust has to take a step back and re-evaluate themselves. It’s still incredibly early for Wilson, whose gunslinger style was undoubtedly going to cause trouble at the start of his career. Moreover, he hasn’t garnered much help from his offensive cast.
There’s plenty of time for the Jets to find some synergy. However, for our purposes here, New York is still a team incredibly out of sync, and without the talent or cohesion to compete against an ascending Titans team.
The Titans understand that the AFC South is their division to lose. In the grand scheme of things, they can’t afford a loss to New York. Yes, the game is on the Jets’ home turf, but the last time the Jets played at home, they were walloped by New England, to the tune of 25-6. Tennessee seems like an even more formidable opponent, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
Tennessee’s offense is a clear mismatch, and the defense is coming together
Most elements of this game appear to be leaning in the Titans’ favor. The engine of the Titans’ offense, Derrick Henry, is off to another hot start. The Jets’ run defense, meanwhile, has allowed at least 100 rushing yards in every game thus far.
The Titans love to test their opponents early on the ground, but they also have the tools to take the lead early via the pass. Ryan Tannehill may be without A.J. Brown, and Julio Jones’ status is up in the air as well. Nevertheless, the connection between Tannehill and Jones has been beginning to heat up.
Tennessee’s passing offense isn’t a high-level unit just yet, but the mismatch is exacerbated by the Jets’ lack of established talent in the secondary. Rookie Michael Carter II has been solid in the slot thus far. But aside from him and Marcus Maye, there isn’t much in the way of consistency for this unit. Tennessee should at least be able to find modest success, even when short-handed.
Moving over to the Titans’ defense, there are more strengths to take note of. Jeffery Simmons and Denico Autry have been good from the interior, and Harold Landry already has 14 pressures off the edge. David Long has been a stalwart at linebacker, and in the secondary, Kristian Fulton and Kevin Byard are both playing well, with Byard back at a Pro Bowl level early on. If the team gets Caleb Farley back, who hasn’t yet been placed on injured reserve, that would just be an added bonus.
All this isn’t to say that the Jets don’t have talent in pockets across their roster. Their interior defensive line is strong, and that could give Tennessee some trouble on offense. But even so, Tennessee seems to be too good of a team to give the Jets a chance. It may not be a shut-out, but Tennessee should be able to cover.
Titans vs. Jets Prediction: Titans 23, Jets 10
