What to expect from the Panthers at Texans?
Is this going to be a bloodbath, or will we see a competitive matchup?
The Texans face another loss at QB
Already sans Pro Bowl QB Deshaun Watson, the Houston Texans’ QB situation got even worse in Week 2. When the Texans came out for the second half of their game against the Cleveland Browns, Mills was under center, not Tyrod Taylor. Taylor suffered a left hamstring injury in the first half, which will force him to miss at least the next four weeks. Houston placed him on short-term injured reserve on September 21.
The Texans played decently in Taylor’s absence, but the team wasn’t able to topple the Browns. With Taylor out, the Houston offense had some work to do throughout the week to make Mills more comfortable. However, Carolina’s defense will not be much comfort coming to town on Thursday Night Football tonight.
The Panthers have amassed 10 sacks through two weeks of the season. Couple that with 10 pass deflections and 3 interceptions, and the picture is clear: Carolina’s defense is red-hot. However, can the offense take advantage of a weak opponent?
Sam Darnold’s time to shine on Thursday Night Football?
So far, a change in scenery has helped the 2018 No. 3 overall pick. Darnold’s stats do not necessarily pop off the page, but he is getting better at protecting the football and giving his playmakers chances. His prior relationship with WR Robby Anderson has bloomed on a couple of deep shots this season, while DJ Moore leads the Panthers in targets. Meanwhile, running back Christian McCaffrey has proven to be as reliable as ever by gaining 324 scrimmage yards through two games.
Darnold has a chance to get his team to 3-0 with a victory against the Texans. Carolina’s defense should hold Mills and the Houston offense at bay, but it will be up to Darnold to take advantage of a weak opponent in a primetime environment. Be sure to catch the broadcast or live stream of Thursday Night Football tonight between the Panthers and Texans at 8:15 PM ET.
